Hello, my name is Jason and the condensed story is that I grew up in the middle of the US (central Illinois), studied history and married a German. My first trip to Europe was in 1997. I spent three years teaching in the US and then finished writing my M. A. in History in Germany. I started working as a tour guide about 15 years ago for companies in Munich as well as directly for the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site. My wife is originally from the Nuremberg area and I explored the city in my free time on our holidays and weekends there. The more I got to know the city, the better I liked it. Although the Third Reich sites and courthouse are the initial draw for some people, the city has a thousand years of fascinating history, fantastic Gothic architecture, welcoming people and a bit of an independent streak that I could identify with. I'd be happy to help you explore these places with a walking tour. Please note that I do not offer driving tours, food tours or shopping tours. Jason E. Overview of your Munich tour

Please note that the memorial site does not allow children under 13 on tours. The name Dachau will forever be associated with the most infamous crimes of the Nazis. This was the first concentration camp set up in Germany and served as a model for the others that followed. We'll see all the remaining original areas in the memorial (gatehouse, bunker, administration HQ, crematorium, rail platform, etc. ) and, if you like, have a look inside the extensive museum. You'll hear about how the camp began and how it was liberated by American troops. You'll also see how it is remembered and presented, and how Germany comes to terms with this past today. I've given Dachau tours for over fifteen years, for student groups, families, individuals, the military, private tour companies and for the memorial itself. I am officially certified by the memorial site to offer tours and have a Master's degree in History. Many people have questions about this time period: I'll do my best to answer any you may have.

Our tour with Jason was lovely. I had my elderly parents and my teenage children with me. He made it informative and interesting for everyone. He was also very conscientious about my parents well-being walking throughout the tour. Would definitely recommend touring with Jason.

We were visiting Munich with our four grand kids ages 11-18 and we wanted them to see Dachau and get an informed and sensitive perspective as a family. Jason was perfect for this approach. He promptly met us and gave a presentation with just enough background from which we were able emotionally experience the site without being overwhelmed by facts and figures. He was accommodating to our questions, and if you are looking to feel the experience rather than just memorize what happened, he was excellent.

Very knowledgeable, friendly good guide.

Your Munich tour itinerary

For this Dachau tour we start with the World War I era buildings the Nazis used for the camp at first, then on to the rail platform, gatehouse, roll-call square and administration HQ. We also see the reconstructed prisoners' barracks and fence. After that we walk over to the religious memorials and the crematorium area. We usually finish up back at the museum. But the timing is very flexible and more or less time can be spent at each site depending on the group's interests. There is also, of course, plenty of time to ask questions and for discussion if you wish.
