Explore Kiel your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Kiel tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Kiel for every interest, including:

History tours: Step inside Nikolaikirche on the Alter Markt to see its Gothic details, then compare eras at the Rathaus tower and the shipbuilding cranes along the fjord. Your guide can take you to the Laboe Naval Memorial and the preserved U-995 submarine, and explain the Kiel Canal story while you watch ships pass the Holtenau locks and lighthouse.

Nature and Wildlife tours: Wander the Botanischer Garten to learn about Baltic coastal plants, then follow easy trails along the Schwentine River for birdwatching and quiet river views. If you want sea air, your guide can plan a ferry-and-footpath loop to Falckensteiner Strand for dune walks and harbour lookout points.

The city centre is walkable, and buses plus harbour ferries connect the fjord and neighbourhoods. For beaches, countryside, or farther day trips, you can book chauffeured tours or tours with private transportation, or ask your local guide about arranging a car.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Kiel inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Kiel

Based in Kiel, you can fan out along the Baltic coast and into brick towns and lake country without long drives. These day trips pair well with the city’s maritime vibe, and your tour can focus on old streets, harbours, or quiet nature when you want a change of pace.

- Lübeck: Walk the UNESCO old town framed by the Holstentor, step into soaring brick churches, and taste marzipan where it’s a local staple. Strong pick for history, architecture, and sweets, with your tour weaving courtyards, canals, and bakeries into a simple route.

- Hamburg: Take in the harbour, the red-brick lanes of the Speicherstadt, and striking modern riverfront views in a single sweep. Good if you like big-city energy and waterside scenes, and your tour balances headline sights with a quieter neighbourhood stop.

- Schleswig and Haithabu: Explore Viking-age stories at the historic site and museum, then see the cathedral and calm shores of the Schlei inlet. Best for archaeology, churches, and coastal scenery, with your tour linking the highlights without rushing.

- Plön and the Holstein Switzerland lakes: Stroll lakefront paths, look up to castle views, and watch birds across rolling hills and clear water. A fit for photography and easy walking, and your tour keeps the pace light with scenic pauses.

- Laboe and the Kiel Fjord: Ride a ferry for wide harbour views, walk the beach promenade, and watch ship traffic glide past headlands and dunes. Ideal for sea air, maritime scenes, and a simple schedule, with your tour adjusting to wind and weather.
