History tours: Trace Stuttgart’s story from its origins as a stud farm for royal horses to its role in modern Germany by visiting the Old Castle’s state museum and its medieval courtyard.

Museums tours: Spend the morning in the Mercedes-Benz Museum exploring automotive history from the first patented car to concept vehicles of the future, or see the Porsche Museum’s striking collection of classic and racing models. Explore the Staatsgalerie for European art or the Linden Museum for artefacts from around the world.

Off the beaten path tours: Discover the quirky Stuttgart Pig Museum with its thousands of pig-themed items, or wander the city’s hidden vineyards still producing wine within city limits.

Stuttgart has an efficient public transit network of trams and buses that connects most attractions. For areas outside the city or less accessible sites, arrange chauffeured tours or ask your local guide about private transportation options.

Day trip ideas from Stuttgart

Use Stuttgart as your base, then slip out to nearby towns and hilltops for day trips that blend castles, old streets, and green space without long drives, which also pairs well with private tours.

- Ludwigsburg Palace and gardens: tour grand rooms and stroll formal grounds, then circle the lake at Monrepos; ideal if you enjoy architecture, easy garden walks, and steady photo stops.

- Tübingen and Bebenhausen: explore half-timbered lanes by the Neckar, watch the punting boats, and add the quiet abbey village nearby; great for history, student-town energy, and slow cafés.

- Esslingen am Neckar: climb to the old fort for views, wander medieval lanes, and taste local sweets in the market square; suits travellers who like compact streets, towers, and vineyard scenery at the edge of town.

- Hohenzollern Castle and the Swabian Alb: head to the hilltop fortress for sweeping views, then take a short ridge walk or a village stop below; strong choice if you want castles, light hiking, and big panoramas.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Stuttgart most travellers miss.
