Explore Trier your way

At ToursByLocals, we believe that how you explore is just as important as where you go. That’s why every Trier tour is private, flexible, and built around you: Move at your own pace, skip the crowds, make connections and follow your curiosity. Find local guides offering private tours in Trier for every interest, including:

History tours: Trier has history in plain view. The Porta Nigra towers over the old town, its massive stone blocks darkened with age. A short walk away, the Imperial Baths stretch across a large site of arches and underground corridors. The Basilica of Constantine shows the scale of Roman ambition. The Cathedral of St. Peter combines Roman foundations with medieval design, each layer marking a different era.

Nature and Wildlife tours: The Moselle River winds through steep hills covered with vineyards. Along the quieter banks, swans and herons move slowly through the water. Inland, the Eifel region changes the scenery with pine forest, open fields, and the still water of volcanic lakes. Some trails climb to open viewpoints, others stay shaded under tall trees.

Art and Culture tours: The Rhineland Museum holds Roman mosaics and artefacts found in the city. A few streets over, small galleries display paintings and sculpture by local artists. Churches around the old town keep original frescoes and stonework. In the Moselle Valley, wine estates pair tastings with an introduction to the area’s winemaking traditions.

The old town is easy to walk, and local buses reach nearby districts. For trips into the Moselle Valley or the Eifel hills, private transport makes it possible to visit several places in a single day without rushing.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all itinerary, you can tailor your private tour to match your interests, pace and personality with a local who knows Trier inside and out.

Day trip ideas from Trier

Use Trier as your base and dip into nearby river towns, forests, and even a second country; these day trips keep travel time short, and your tour can lean toward wine, views, or easy walks.

Luxembourg City sits a short hop across the border, with deep valleys, bridges, and old quarters that are easy to explore on foot. You can trace viewpoints along the Corniche, stop for coffee in the centre, and fit in a few historic sites without rushing. Good if you want a change of language and vibe in the same day.

Bernkastel‑Kues brings classic Moselle charm. The timbered Marktplatz, steep vineyard slopes, and riverfront make a simple plan: slow wander, local Riesling tasting, then a look from castle ruins above town. It suits you if wine, photos, and compact streets sound like your kind of day.

Saarburg feels small and scenic, with a waterfall running right through the old centre, mill wheels turning beside cafés, and a short walk up to castle ruins for river views. Add a vineyard stop or a chairlift ride in season, and keep the rest of the day open for a riverside path.

Cochem lines up river bends and a hilltop castle silhouette. Stroll the laneways, sample regional dishes, and take a steady walk up for views over slate roofs and the Moselle. This is a straightforward pick if you want classic scenery with easy pacing.

Saarschleife at Cloef near Mettlach gives you the big viewpoint shot. Forest paths lead to lookouts over the Saar Loop, and you can pair it with a calm riverside walk or time in the village. Simple, scenic, and ideal if you like nature without a long hike.

A private tour with a local guide is the best way to really get to know a place. Skip the crowds, follow your interests, and see a side of Trier most travellers miss.
