Welcome to Chicago and to Illinois! I am originally from Chicago and have lived in Illinois nearly all my life. I am also a veteran traveller, having spent significant time in all 50 states, plus in 15 countries throughout Europe, Central America, and Asia. I have major travel experience in Canada, Guatemala, Israel, Palestine, China, the Philippines, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and brief experiences in Jamaica, Switzerland, France, Mexico. I believe travel is about discovering stories and finding awe and beauty—everyplace we go. My best travelling experiences have come from discovering locals who can tell me the stories and show me the sights—out of their own joy and enthusiasm. As a part-time tour guide (for 20 years) my single aim is to share hospitality with those who have come to visit. Travellers are my guests. My hospitality consists of providing practical information—answering guests questions and meeting their needs while visiting, providing overall orientation, supplying transportation, sharing inside tips, customizing tours, and telling all the stories and anecdotes needed to make the places we visit come alive. When not giving tours, I am a writer (of humor) and a consultant to help non-profit organizations think strategically. My particular interest is history, particularly U. S. presidential history & sites, as well as migratory history. I am a curious guide; my academic degrees are in psychology, history, and religion. One of the greatest benefits of travel comes from finding common ground with people of differing beliefs and cultures. Chicago and its surrounding region is rich in both local and national history. The stories we share about our town and state help us understand the bigger pictures better—U. S. history, international migration, religious and cultural changes, economic progress and tragedy… I am eager to meet you, assist you in your visit, and exchange our stories and curiosities with each other. Bachelor's Degree in History (Southern Illinois University) Masters in Religion (Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington D.C.) Overview of your Chicago tour

We'll visit a living, outdoor historical village in DuPage County that'll transport us back to the 1800s. Further into the outdoors, we'll see Oak Park where we'll tour 2 Frank Lloyd Wright buildings—his own home & the Unity Temple. While in town, we'll see the boyhood home of Ernest Hemingway. Back to green, we'll see Garfield Park, designed & built in the 1870s by the same man who designed the world's first skyscraper. At the center of the park is the Garfield Observatory, one of the largest indoor botanical conservatories in the U. S. Shaped like a haystack, it houses a palm house, fern room & desert house. What I love about this tour is the break it offers after being on the go. Retreating into nature, history & architecture may be the relaxing "day off" you need.

Your Chicago tour itinerary

•I'll pick you up in my car at 225 South Canal Street (Union Station Chicago) and drive you either the Naper Settlement, or the Kline Creek Farm—depending on the day and time of your tour—for the ambiance of "suburban" life in the 1800s—life in a slower age. •Then we will travel to Oak Park, where we will tour the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio and Wright's Unity Temple. We will actually see the house where Ernest Hemingway was born! •Then it will be on to Garfield Park and Observatory for a drive around the 185-acre park and a stroll through the indoor observatory. •We will finally stop for lunch: I'll have a list of restaurants for you to choose from. •At the end of the day I'll take you back to Union Station. The order of this tour may vary as entry times to the various sites sometimes change. This trip can be customized, including pick-up and drop-off points. The inside of the Hemingway House may be possible to visit—for an additional cost, depending on the day of your tour.
