Hello! I can't wait to share my deep love of Chicago with you. An actor, photographer, and history buff who has called Chicago home all of my adult life, I revel in sharing stories about the Windy City -- and about the people who built it, made it their home, and left an indelible mark on it. Chicago has it all: a stunning skyline, an incredible shoreline, a vibrant art scene, a bustling theater and film community, and restaurants celebrating food from all corners of the world. Chicagoans love sports, too! Chicago is home to 77 (soon to 78) communities, all with distinct personalities and traits. We can't possibly visit them all at once, but I can certainly entice you so you come back and explore some more! Join me in the "city of big shoulders" for a visit filled with history, anecdotes, and beauty. All my tours can be customized upon request. Pilsen (named after a city in what is now the Czech Republic ) is a historic district and vibrant community who celebrates art -- street art in particular. At first, murals were part of the activism against the Vietnam War. Now, they are a way for incredible artists to celebrate their history, culture, and loves. In this tour, we will walk down 18th Street to Harrison Park and all the adjacent streets, resplendent with painted or mosaic murals. We will also mention all the wonderful restaurants that make Pilsen one of the most celebrated areas in Chicago. Please note that we can also focus the tour on the west side of Ashland to go all the way south to Cermak.
Our group of 6 was in town for a conference. We met Sylvie on a Saturday morning and thoroughly enjoyed walking through Pilsen and learning about the history of the neighborhood as well as the mural artists and their work. Sylvie has a way of telling stories while she presents information so the tour went by without even realizing it had been two hours! We loved Pilsen and seeing it for the first time with Sylvie. Highly recommend.
Sylvie is extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. We were thoroughly engaged throughout the tour and enjoyed it enormously. She is also easy to work with and was able to change the date of our tour when we asked. Thank you!
Sylvie was great! She communicated often before the tour, and adjusted the tour slightly so that we finished close to our lunch spot. She was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. She greeted Cesar Perez (one of the local muralists) walking out of his studio and we were able to ask him questions about his work. We also were able to tell him how much we loved his murals. It was a fantastic morning! Highly recommend!
Sylvie was amazing! She catered the perfect tour for our group. She knows a lot about Chicago and Pilsen in particular, and the whole group had a great time.
- We will meet in front of Simone's on 18th Street and start walking West, covering the varied history of the neighborhood as well as checking all the magnificent murals along 18th Street. - We will cross Ashland to get all the way to Harrison Park, check out the Mexican American museum, and then go south on Wolcott to check Hector Duarte's House and Studio. Time permitting, - We will meander through Cullerton, 19th Street, Dvorak Park, to see as many murals as possible, before getting back to 18th Street. We will end the tour at the Boogie mural.
