We enjoyed our tour at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bob showed us parts of the museum that we would have missed on our own. It was nice to learn about the collection, and the wonderful patrons that made the Art Institute possible. Thank you, Bob!

The Art Institute of Chicago is a treasure trove of amazing works of art from all over the world. Having attended the school there as a child & receiving my my master's degree from there, I know the place like the back of my hand ! I will take you on a journey through its famous collections and give a historical context of the art in relationship to the history of the museum. The art collections are one of the finest in the world. I look forward to showing you the museum , as a person with great love of this Chicago treasure !

This tour was the highlight of our Chicago visit. Bob was a superb guide, very personable, knowledgeable and entertaining. He led us on a carefully planned path through the galleries explaining the thread that passed from one artistic era and artist to the next. I think that this is what made the experience extra special, not just information about individual paintings but the connections that we would never have seen on our own. The start of the tour was an absolute delight, a complete surprise that I know we wouldn't have discovered on our own - the basement display of 64 miniature works of art by a woman architect of the early 1900s. Bob opened our eyes to this new world. We loved the whole tour experience so much so that we continued on our own for a few hours after our lunch in the Members restaurant (Bob arranged for us to enter). That was a special treat. Thank you, Bob
Our private tour with Bob through ToursByLocals was nothing short of a masterpiece. If you are looking for a guide who transforms a standard museum visit into a deeply enriching, unforgettable journey, look no further than Bob. From the very first moment of planning to the final goodbye, he demonstrated an incredible level of accommodation and flexibility, seamlessly tailoring the entire day's schedule to perfectly match our personal pace, interests, and energy levels. The absolute highlight of our scheduling arrangement was taking advantage of Bob’s exclusive member pass. This elite perk allowed our group to enter the museum at 10:00 AM, a full hour before the main tourist crowds descended upon the exhibits. Walking through those magnificent, quiet halls without the usual hustle and bustle made a massive difference. It created an intimate, serene atmosphere that allowed us to truly connect with the artwork. Bob’s incredible passion for the exhibits we viewed was palpable and highly contagious. He doesn't just recite memorized facts; he possesses a profound appreciation and love for history and art that shines through in every single sentence. We spent a significant amount of our time exploring the famous Thorne Miniature Rooms. This was a massive highlight for us. Bob brought these intricate, tiny historical periods to life, pointing out microscopic architectural details, craftsmanship techniques, and historical contexts that we completely would have missed on our own. We also dedicated a large portion of our tour to the stunning Impressionist galleries. This is where Bob’s expertise truly reached another level. Having Bob as our guide gave us an immense amount of deep, behind-the-scenes insights that you simply cannot get by just walking by and looking at a pretty picture on a wall. He explained the artists' personal struggles, the revolutionary brush techniques, the subtle play of light, and the political climates that birthed the Impressionist movement. He turned canvas and paint into living history stories. Bob completely elevated our museum experience from simple sightseeing to an immersive, educational adventure. His warmth, elite knowledge, and dedication to our comfort made this a definitive five-star experience. We cannot recommend booking a tour with Bob highly enough!
Wonderful few hours with a wonderful and knowledgeable artist. My husband and I had the opportunity to tour the Art Institute with Bob. What a treat. Bob is knowledgeable, informative, enthusiastic and an extremely down to earth individual. We have no hesitance in highly recommending this tour and we hope to take another tour with Bob when we are next in Chicago.
Bob has breadth of knowledge about not just art but also the city of Chicago and the patrons who made the Art Institute what it is today! Thanks to his knowledge of the museum, he made sure we saw some fantastic pieces that we would have otherwise missed due to the sheer size of the Institute. Kudos for keeping mom and dad, PLUS three teens engaged!
We had the most amazing time with Bob (a distinguished artist in his own rite) at the art institute. The tour was personal, knowledgeable and Bon focused on details that we wouldn’t have been able to pick up on ourselves or on a normal tour! I cannot recommend the tour highly enough!
We will meet at the new Modern Wing. I will tell you about the history of the museum. We will then start in Contemporary Art section. Walking to the famous Chagall Stained glass window & the Reconstruction of the architect Louis Sullivan , Trading Room. We will walk through a hall of Roman treasures. From there we will see the amazing collection of art & furnishings of early America. We will look at the wonderful Medieval Rooms-and then the spectacular American Indian Art. Moving on to paintings from Europe beginning in the 1500s. Goya, El Greco, the Flemish masters and Our Rembrandt! Now we will experience the reason the museum is so famous, the Impressionists'. Monet , Cezanne Degas & Van Gogh. We will finish at the Thorne Rooms with over 40 miniature interiors , unbelievable doll houses of exquisite detail.
