Escape noise, crowds and hot days in the cool greenery of a Highland Oakwood. Owned by Woodland Trust, Oak have grown here since at least the 1840's, possibly thousands of years. . . Walk to the Oakwoods from Drumnadrochit along Good Sir James's tree-lined avenue. The Earls of Seafield once had a grand house here, and Oak was the estate's greatest source of income in 1800. Historically used for cartwheels, firewood and leather-tanning, these beautiful trees are now protected and home to many species of birds including Redstart and Wood warbler. St Drostan, the patron saint of Glenurqhart, lived on a hillock here, where he grew his own food, and the woods have a gentle atmosphere. The Oakwood Trail circuits the Southern part of the woods, around a a glacial kettle hole known as the Duck Pond. The route is 1km along firm, gently sloping paths. This Tour takes only takes about half an hour and so is best combined with the Arboretum at no extra cost.
Meet at Loch Ness Hub if on foot, or the South entrance of Balmacaan wood if you have transport. From Loch Ness Hub: walk 15 minutes to the North entrance of the wood Follow Good Sir James's driveway to the South entrance of the woods. Circuiting the Oakwoods and returning to the North entrance takes 3-4 hours. A visit to the Arboretum along the way is highly recommended and takes an extra hour or so, so allow 4-5 hours From the South entrance: walk directly 1 km around the Oakwood trail. Returning to the South entrance takes 1hr, 2 hrs if walking very slowly. Please allow 3-4 hours in total if visiting the Arboretum, at no extra cost.
