Isle of Skye from Inverness

We can categorically declare that this was the most enjoyable, entertaining, informative, and overall wonderful tour of the several that we scheduled for our two weeks in Scotland. Callum M. was not only an excellent tour guide (and driver on those single-track Skye roads), but an amazing storyteller and conversationalist, making this scheduled eleven-hour trek an adventure that seemed to fly by. There was no rush at all, and he was very patient in allowing us as much time as we needed to look around and savor the various sites we visited, from Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle to a leisurely drive across the Highlands to Eilean Donan Castle, to the pools of Sligachan in view of the Cuillin Hills and so on around the Isle of Skye. He repeatedly said that it was "our day" and that time was not a worry. Callum's knowledge of the culture, history, legend, and lore of the Highlands, the Hebrides, and the entire area made for a fun and incredibly edifying trip. I think he lives in Inverness, but his roots are on the Isle of Raasay, immediately east of Skye. So, his perspective and many of his stories were grounded in his family experience, bringing an intimacy and vividness to his descriptions of the life of the Highlands and islands. I won't give any spoilers, but his tales of some of his forebears' lives on Raasay, though no doubt often told, were poignant and memorable. For anyone who wants a perfect first tour of the Isle of Skye, this is most definitely the one to take. We highly recommend this tour, and we look forward to touring with Callum again the next time we are in Scotland, which hopefully will be soon. An emphatic tip of the Harris tweed cap to Callum!!

Callum was the perfect guide for my excursion to Skye. What made it special was his family connection to the area and his generosity in sharing his family history in addition to his deep knowledge of the topology and Scottish history. He is a great conversationalist and always attentive to my comfort and safety during some of the slippery walks. I spent the following days reflecting on my experience and am looking forward to my next trip to the Highlands to immerse myself in the landscape in a different season.
