Hi there! I'm Neil and I've lived in the Highlands of Scotland almost all my life. More than 8 generations of my family have been born and bred here and my clan, The Munro clan, is one of the largest in the area - you don't get all that without picking up a bit of local knowledge in the process!! I can driver-guide you on any tour you'd like to take from castles to distilleries, amazing views to quiet beaches and the famous Loch Ness to the scenes of Outlander, Scotland has it all. Local knowledge and stories that they don't always put in the history books really make the places we visit come alive and will stay with you for years to come. I will collect you from your accommodation, whether that's central or rural, or directly off your cruise ship from the ports of Invergordon, Edinburgh, Portree or Ullapool and return you there at the end of your tour. I drive an air conditioned, 8-seater Mercedes-Benz with leather interior, privacy glass and charging points for your convenience. Travelling this way ensures that everyone is comfortable, has unrestricted views and your tour is personal, friendly and allows access to some of the less visited gems that Scotland has to offer. I love the challenge of tailoring bespoke tours to my passenger's needs so don't be afraid to ask for something different! I've lived and breathed Scotland's history, culture and heritage for most of my life and it's my love for my country that I enjoy sharing with others. I've worked in the tourism industry for over 15 years guiding walks and tours and hosting visitors to our area. I'd love to help you make memories of Scotland that will last a lifetime, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy your tour! ToursByLocals guide since 2019 and have worked in the Scottish Tourism industry for the previous 15 years. Member of the Scottish Independent Tour Operators Association (SITOA). Member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). I don't have any restrictions on my tour.

I've lived in this area my whole life, my family have lived here for the last 300 years and my clan arrived around 500 years before that. . . but the history of these lands is older still. Join me as we share the journey. Take in the huge skies of the east coast as we travel the old drove road to a stunning vista of the Dornoch Firth. On a clear day, we can see Dunrobin Castle from there, family seat of the Earl of Sutherland who's history may be a little jaded but who's castle is simply beautiful. Stretch your legs as you walk the grounds, explore the rooms and hopefully catch the 'big birds' in flight at the falconry display. You'll enjoy some lunch in the bustling market town of Dornoch before finishing off the day with a distillery tour and a little of the amber nectar to warm your cockles! I love getting the craic* with my customers and this tour takes you around all the wonderful places on my doorstep - you'll understand why I've spent my life here! * Gaelic for good conversation, gossip or a laugh
We had a wonderful day with Neil!! Highly recommend the Balblair Distillery.
We had an incredible day exploring the North of Scotland with Neal. Dunrobin Castle was like something out of a fairy tale, and Neal's commentary and knowledge of history added so much depth to the experience. We especially loved the stop in the village of Dornoch, where he picked a lovely restaurant for lunch. The adventure continued after we left Dornoch. He led us through the sweeping Highland countryside along the Dornoch Firth on our return to Inverness. We experienced breathtaking views including the ruins of castle, sheep along the hillside, and seals basking in the sun. An unexpected highlight was a thoughtful surprise. We stopped at a viewpoint. He had packed a flask of Scotch for my husband and I to enjoy toasting a 'wee dram' overlooking the majestic view of the Firth. It was the perfect end to the day! Slàinte Mhath! We highly recommend him! Thank you Neal!
Excellent!
Neil is a gem! he met us on time & was so efficient driving us 6 to many sites on the Dunrobin Castle tour. He knows everyone & has lots of ways to get you in & out of places quickly. My husband has difficultly walking long distances & he was able to help w that. We especially loved the falconry exhibition at the castle & the Shandwick stone. He is full of facts and truly is a local in that area. Highly recommend - i'd love to go back when we have more time in Scotland and do his Isle of Skye tour.
Our guide, Neil Munro, was truly wonderful, from planning our tour days to guiding us through Scottish lands surrounding Inverness and beyond, including the Isle of Skye. My husband and I enjoyed four full days with Neil and appreciated his expansive knowledge of Scotland's history, his warm, thoughtful manner and grand sense of humor. My husband commented that Neil was very conscientious, e.g., anticipating our needs, ensuring our comfort, etc. Thank you Neil, for making our experience so memorable!
Neil Munro was one of the best guides that we have encountered in the many times we have used Tours By Locals. All the boxes were ticked for on time, personality, information, transportation (that beautiful roomy new van!), and more. But what really made this tour special were some of the unplanned encounters with Neil's friends that showed he was a true member of the local community and had an everyday knowledge of the people and what was important to them. It made us feel at home in Scotland.
