East Lothian is an area which first time tourists bypass, however it is steeped in some great History. There are many old Roman Forts in the area. It is also the birthplace of the National Flag of Scotland, the Saltire, or more commonly known as the St. Andrews cross. The legend has it in 832 AD King Hungus of Scotland prayed to St Andrew for Inspiration, before a battle with the English, and the cloud formation became apparent in the sky of a Saltire. The Scots won the battle. We look at the battle site and learn the full story, as well as visit the 13th Century Dirleton Castle, and the 15th Century clifftop Castle at Tantallon. You will also visit the town of Haddington, the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland, as well as the birthplace of John Knox, the reformist. You will finish up with a visit to Glenkinchie Distillery for a tour and a Dram
Departing Edinburgh City Centre at 9. 30am - We will make our way through the Saltire Trail of East Lothian to Dirleton Castle, where entrance to the castle is optional, it is also home of the largest herbaceous border in the world, spending around 1 hour there. - We then travel around the East Lothian Coastline to the clifftop 14th century Tantallon, with stunning views over the North Sea, again entrance is optional for passengers. - From Tantallon we visit the birthplace of the St. Andrews cross, dating back to 832ad. The visitor centre is free, and we will learn all about the legend of how the flag became the national flag of Scotland. - After a fantastic lunch at the family owned Mercat Gril, we make our way to Glenkinchie Distillery, the Home of the Edinburgh malt. Tour of the Distillery followed by a couple drams appreciating the "water of life". This is a suggested itinerary, let me know what you would like to see and do and I will customize the tour accordingly.
