What I love most about this tour is the vibrant mix of old buildings and modern living. Starting at St Andrews Square I will tell you the stories of David Hume, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Dundas and many others, before we enter the Royal Bank of Scotland's stunning building and Register House - the Adam designed Scottish archive store - a treasure trove for Scottish Geneology. Taking our time we will stroll along the main streets and back lanes until we reach Charlotte Square - with stories of Queen Victoria, Joseph Lister and Elizabeth Grant - until we reach Bute House, the official residence of Scotland's First Minister. There are many famous authors who have written about the New Town, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Ian Rankin, Alexander McCall Smith, and Walter Scott and I can show you some of the key locations. There are optional private tours of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery or the Georgian Town House if you wish. The tour can be extended to a full day to include the Royal Botanic Gardens.
- Meet at Royal Bank of Scotland, St Andrews Square, Edinburgh. - Private guided tour of St Andrew's Square including RBS and Register House (subject to opening hours). - Walk along Princes Street, George Street and the back lanes. - Detailed walk round Charlotte Square to No 6, Bute House on North Side, and potential visit to Georgian Town House No 7 (subject to opening hours). - Walk along side streets where famous authors have spent time and imagination and then Queen Street. - Go down to the next phase of the New Town, with beautiful town houses and open spaces. - Lovely views to the North of the city and the hills beyond (subject to weather!). - End at Scottish Portrait Gallery, Queen Street - optional private tour, also refreshments, shop and WC.
