Since moving to Edinburgh in 1988 from Germany, via South Africa and Switzerland, I am continually struck by the awesome beauty of this European Capital, by the visible history, the living culture and the juxtaposition of nature and city. I have been guiding individuals and groups through Edinburgh, Scotland and the rest of the UK since 1994 and just love imparting knowledge, local anecdotes, introducing guests to the history and the daily life of this mesmerising country and city. Come and join me on one of my walks and prepare to be enchanted, entertained and educated. If you have any particular requirements or interests, I would love to hear from you and could then tailor a tour exactly to your requirements/interests. As a mother of six, I am particularly suited to adapt the program towards children/teenagers and have experience in bringing history alive for them. I very much look forward to meeting you and showing you around! 29yrs of experience of guiding individuals and groups for shorter or longer holidays, including cruise passengers. If you are an avid gardener (like me. . . ) or just enjoy seeing the green spaces of a capital city, this is the tour for you! Edinburgh is a surprisingly green city. This tour juxtaposes a private urban garden with Edinburgh's famous Botanical Gardens and a local allotment. Every season has something to offer for the amateur gardener/botanist. Edinburgh's unique climate allows for a wonderful variety of plants and trees. The Chinese Collection within the Botanical Gardens is renowned and will open your eyes to what kind of plants were brought over by various botanists during the ages and which we now regard as indigenous. Scotland is famous for its rhododendrons and azaleas which are particularly beautiful in May. Join me for a unique insight into Edinburgh's gardens!
- Edinburgh boasts some beautiful private urban gardens right in the heart of the New Town and we will start there, discovering the small pond and island which inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write "Treasure Island". - From here we stroll down to the Botanical Gardens where we have ample time to explore the different areas of this world famous plant collection. - Depending on your interest, we can look at the rockery gardens, the Chinese collection or be amazed by the vast azalea and rhododendron plantings. - From here we cross a local park and visit Edinburgh's most famous allotment site at Inverleith and can see what amateur gardeners manage to grow in this climate. If you have any specific questions or interest, please feel free to send me a message. I can customize the tour for you.
