I am Edinburgh born bred and educated. I am passionate about Edinburgh and love showing it to people and revealing its hidden secrets. I have always been fascinated by history landscape and architecture. I gradually became aware of how crucially such culture has shaped our understanding and the world we live in. This led to a further MA later in life from Edinburgh University in History of Art and Architectural History. I have now just completed an MSc. in Architectural Conservation. I try to make my guiding informative but lighthearted, interesting and fun with many photo opportunities. I love meeting international people, have many overseas friends and often find guiding a mutual learning opportunity. I live in the city center and can meet you at central hotels or a convenient landmark for walking tours tailored to your own schedule and needs or interests. My Edinburgh driving tours are a very good way to orientate yourself and see highlights to explore later at your own pace. Edinburgh is surrounded by lovely countryside with so many interesting places that I love taking people to visit. I was brought up rambling round ancient castles and listening to stories of old. I have lived in Edinburgh all my life and know virtually every corner of it. I am a qualified tour guide and used to guiding in historic houses. I was often previously asked to lead tours in Edinburgh. I have taken many specialist courses on art, history and architecture related subjects in addition to four different university degrees. More importantly, I am eager to share these interests and show people fascinating places.

To fully see all Edinburgh has to offer really requires both driving and walking. We will drive round both UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Classical Georgian Newtown, actually 200 years old, and medieval Old Town. We may explore castles, churches and villages nearby as we take in the unique stunning geological features. I will explain the history and context in the very footsteps of the great figures from the Age of Enlightenment. We will then park in the Newtown and walk up to the ancient Castle and down the Royal Mile to explore the fascinating warren of the Old Town full of secret surprises and commune with ghosts from the long and turbulent past. We may take a detour to the famous University and Greyfiars Kirk before continuing down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace or else return to the car and back to your hotel. The tour may be available for up to 6 people by arrangement.
This full day tour of Edinburgh was fabulous! Toby is probably one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had. I learned so much about Edinburgh and its history. I feel I could teach a class. We went to numerous places. I would do this again and highly recommend tours by local and Toby.

I've never met a more prim and proper tour guide than Toby. He has kind, very mannerful and even at his age he could outwalk most of us. His mind was so rich in history going back through centuries about the monarchy, the locals, and learning the architectural designs of the City.. Getting around by car around the city is a perfect startof as it will give you immedately a perspective of the City and then walking on foot through new town and old town you will realize its transition and also realize it isn't as far or dificult to walk there from each other for as long as you will know the shortcuts. Having the weather as cold as it was in March, this was the perfect setup for my family.
We had a beautiful sunny day tour of Edinburgh with Toby and saw several of the landmark sites and neighborhoods. We especially enjoyed seeing one of the private gardens in Edinburgh. Because of some special interests of ours, he took us to the Surgeon's Museum and the University of Edinburgh which were highlights of our tour. He knows so much history and interesting facts about Edinburgh. He is very flexible in regard to any special client interests to visit. A perfect tour to begin our vacation in Scottland.
