Hi, my name is Valdemar, a 45 years old Madeira island native. I was born in the capital Funchal but my roots are in the west and east of the island, where my grandparents are from. For 16 years I have worked in a store. Getting in contact with people, knowing their stories, was the best part of it and enriched and gave me social skills. In my free time, this island was my breakout. 10 years ago my breakout became a full-time occupation and I swapped a store for an outdoor office and started delivering tours. First with sidecar motorcycles, then minibus and jeeps, as a freelancer guide and since then, my passion for this island got bigger. The satisfaction and smiling faces of my guests were the cherries on top. Right away I felt this was what I was meant to be doing with my life. I feel blessed and very lucky to be able to do what I love for a living. This is where the fifty shades of green meet the deep blues of the Atlantic, on the wild northwest side of the island. Join me on a journey through Madeira’s countryside, where you’ll get a real feel for how people live outside the city. The landscape is shaped by evergreen mountains, dramatic cliffs, and the geometric lines of terraces and farmland, all coming together in a unique and harmonious way. We will walk through the ancient Laurissilva forest, protected by UNESCO, a pre-ice age forest found across much of the north coast. Along the way, we may follow a levada or old footpaths that once connected villages, crossing lush vegetation and quiet, untouched areas. Expect waterfalls, volcanic rock pools where you can swim, and breathtaking viewpoints that remain hidden from most visitors, and even some locals. Each tour can be adapted to your expectations. I keep things flexible, so the day flows naturally and at your own pace.

Val was born and raised in Madeira, so it was great to hear all his knowledge and perspective on this most amazing island. He was also personable, flexible and trustworthy. This was our first visit to Madeira and so it was a great opportunity to get a true taste of this beautiful island with a private tour. Val was an exceptional guide. Very accommodating, personable and knowledgeable with fluent English. We visited breathtaking sights as high as 6000ft, and other places inaccessible to coaches. Also the beautiful coastline including Sao Vicente, Seixal and Porto Moniz. A truly immersive experience and would definitely recommend.
My first time using Tours By Locals. Madeira was a long time on our bucket list of places to visit. After internet searches and YouTube videos we went on the TBL site and chose the tour that covered what we wanted to see and do. Val Andrade, our guide, worked with us and we made an itinerary. Val met us at our cruise port as planned and we started on our tour of the most beautiful sites this island has to offer. Both new and old Madeira, north and west. We asked for lunch and local wine….Excelente
Our tour with Vlad included a day touring the island in an open air jeep. We saw many remote areas and special spots that only a local would know. Vlad was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Highly recommend this tour !!!
A great day spent with Val, clearly enjoys what he does. Took us off the beaten track avoiding lots of big tourist groups. Lots of really helpful information about Madeira, it's history it's links to England and the various regions of the island. Lunch at a local festival with barbecue was delicious even for those not big meat eaters. Day rounded off with a traditional drink in a local bar. Many thanks Val, a memorable day.
After picking you up, we head towards Ribeira Brava, Serra d’Água, Encumeada and Paul da Serra, continuing through the ancient Laurissilva forest and stopping at the mystical Fanal for a short walk. From there, we continue towards Ribeira da Janela, Porto Moniz, Seixal and São Vicente. Cabo Girão, with its glass platform overlooking a 580-metre-high sea cliff, can also be included upon request. These are just some of the main highlights of the tour. Along the way, there are many other stops, viewpoints and places of interest that are not listed in the itinerary. This is a circular tour, and the direction can be reversed depending on weather conditions and, if you would like to swim, sea and tide conditions. If you would like a lunch break, we can stop at a typical local restaurant away from the main tourist areas, with several options to choose from. The itinerary is flexible and can be adapted to your interests and preferences.
