My name is Nicolau, Nico for my friends, born and raised in Madeira, I can say that I live in one of the best and most beautiful places in the world. not only by its exuberant nature but also for our people and traditions, love my heritage and island. I lived outside Madeira for a while, but couldn't stand living far away from my roots. . and since I came back years ago, and took my official Guide and mountain guiding course, knew immediately that the thing that would make me happier and fulfilled was offering and showing you my home! Knowing the Toursbylocals, I was the first guide for Madeira Island and It as been some fantastic years, but everyday feel that its our first day, and been working as an idependent local guide with ToursByLocals (yes looks like it was yesterday) To be able to do what I love, and reach travellers like you own that visit our island and want to see what was really important. . not just going to all the touristic places. . but be free to give you the taste of a local! In my life, I always try not to choose the "big man" and give the maximum back to small independent workers and business, like me, so I hope you don't get tricked and lured as well into a fake tasteless tour, of the big companies sharks "disguised" as a local experiences, that in the end its just one more tour! ;) Let me take you with me and share the best of our island. I love my cars, one is a classic UMM jeep, convertible, completely restored and a great machine, other is my vw transporter mini bus or a SUV, but as professional can also get any type of transport like a bus for a bigger group, and my tours are designed for the people who really want to explore the island in a relaxed calm way, learn about our culture and history. . drink and eat in the real local places. for you as I believe in people, not numbers! Absolutely fantastic tour, covered much more than expected. One of the best guides I have booked for group tour. Personality plus, flexible and made sure everyone was getting the most out of the tour. I highly recommend Nicolau for showing us spectacular views of the island and much of the culture and especially the local stops. If I come back again I will certainly be using this guide. Awesome 1/2 day tour with Nico. Extremely easy going and friendly with a tonne of knowledge. When we return to the stunning island of maderia, we would definitely book more tour time with Nico.
Nico's tour was wonderful. He took us to amazing places and gave us a choice of destinations. During our driving time he gave us history lessons and answered our many questions. Next time we're on the island we will definitely book another tour with him!
We had a phantastic half-a-day tour with Nicolau. The pick up was immediately after we landed at Funchal airport. Nicolau then drove us uphill for several excellent viewing points - first to see the south coast, then to Pico do Areeiro, followed by the Valley of the Nuns and Cabo Girao. As we needed to be at the cruise terminal in Funchal at about 13.00h, we just had another short stop at Camara de Lobos. Here we followed Nicolau's advice to try our first Poncha. Finally, Nicolau dropped us in Funchal.
Nicolau organised an outstanding program of half day tours over 9 days including levada walks ,visits to all parts of the island and many local experiences -visting small vineyards,sampling poncho,enjoying a boat trip- and sharing with us his passion for the culture and beauties of the island. We had time to get off the beaten track and do walks at special beauty spots With his enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the island he created a memorable vacation for us. If the day is clear, we will climb directly to pico do areeiro, the 3rd highest peak on the island to then take the panoramic road to the Nuns valley (this road is only open with good weather conditions). Otherwise, we will depart from Funchal to Eira do Serrado for one of the most beautiful views of Madeira, the Nuns Valley (Curral das Freiras) a small village in the heart of the island. From there its time to head down to Câmara de lobos fishing village and cabo girão cliff, all done in a very calm and with great photo opportunities and stops. -The tour can be customised according to your preferences, please inquire
