My name is Nicolau, Nico for my friends, born and raised in Madeira, I can say that I live in one of the best and most beautiful places in the world. not only by its exuberant nature but also for our people and traditions, love my heritage and island. I lived outside Madeira for a while, but couldn't stand living far away from my roots. . and since I came back years ago, and took my official Guide and mountain guiding course, knew immediately that the thing that would make me happier and fulfilled was offering and showing you my home! Knowing the Toursbylocals, I was the first guide for Madeira Island and It as been some fantastic years, but everyday feel that its our first day, and been working as an idependent local guide with ToursByLocals (yes looks like it was yesterday) To be able to do what I love, and reach travellers like you own that visit our island and want to see what was really important. . not just going to all the touristic places. . but be free to give you the taste of a local! In my life, I always try not to choose the "big man" and give the maximum back to small independent workers and business, like me, so I hope you don't get tricked and lured as well into a fake tasteless tour, of the big companies sharks "disguised" as a local experiences, that in the end its just one more tour! ;) Let me take you with me and share the best of our island. I love my cars, one is a classic UMM jeep, convertible, completely restored and a great machine, other is my vw transporter mini bus or a SUV, but as professional can also get any type of transport like a bus for a bigger group, and my tours are designed for the people who really want to explore the island in a relaxed calm way, learn about our culture and history. . drink and eat in the real local places. for you as I believe in people, not numbers! Based on Câmara de Lobos Area, we start over the little fishing village with the same name. We go up through the rough narrow old road toward to the top of it around 1000mt high, for a great viewpoint to the Nuns Valley. to be delighted with a great poncha Going to pass through the vineyards, go and visit the huge cliffs of Fajã Dos Padres and Cabo Girão, being this the 2nd highest cliff in the world and the highest in Europe. Then we have a good local lunch; to eat some of the local delicacies Touring on the island, and avoiding the touristic boring spots. . going to the real traditional places - my favourite quality spots!
We had the absolute best day with Nicolau. His tour took us way up into the mountains and although the roads are narrow and very precipitous, we never felt afraid or uncomfortable. As we drove around, Nicolau provided very interesting history of Madeira and kept up an interesting conversation in perfect english. We ended the tour with a visit to beautiful fishing village and lunch at a favorite restaurant. We highly recommend this guide.
Nico was such a wonderful guide. Made us fall in love with the entire island. He had knowledge of the history, culture and current times in Madeira. I would definitely hire him again. Vey safe driver and sure knew the short cuts. He watched the weather and the webcams, so we knew when to visit certain areas. Book him before someone else books him first.
Highest recommendation!! Nico guided our party of 5 cruise passengers on a tour of Madeira, including a drive up to the highest point accessible via car, lovely and delicious lunch, visit to the traditional thatched roof houses, and beautiful vistas overlooking the seaside cliffs on the eastern part of the island. We were all overwhelmed by Nico’s love of his home island and truly felt like what he kept calling us, “family.”
The tour with Nico was perfect. We saw so much of Madeira. Nico's knowledge of Madeira was incredible. He grew up on the island and knows it inside out. He shared the history, culture, landscapes and many stories. In addition, as a past soccer player, he also let us know some soccer history from the island. On our tour, we visited Madeira iconic spots but Nico also brought us to some authentic-Madeira places that were less touristy. He was super flexible to make sure we were able to adapt the experience to best meet our preferences within the timeframe. We took the 4x4 on our tour which was incredible. Our group ranged from ages 20 to 60 and everyone had a wonderful time. Thank you, Nico. We highly recommend Nico to anyone touring Madeira.
Nico shaped the perfect day for us in Madeira. After asking the kinds of things we were interested in, his tour took in history, stunning coastal scenery and experiences of different geography and towns in parts of the island. Nico's suggestion for lunch and walk through "dos Padres" organic farm and restaurant by the sea capped a wonderful introduction to Madeira. I highly recommend Nico for his knowledge, his friendliness and his creative way of setting up a touring day. We would use him again!
We only had 1 day to explore Madeira and we were very pleased with Nico as our guide. He took us to various points on the island and was very knowledgeable regarding the area.
