We start the day by driving to Landeyjahöfn harbor and boarding the 30-40-minute ferry to Heimaey. Once we reach Heimaey, the largest and only inhabited island, we begin sightseeing by visiting Elephant Rock. This beautiful basalt rock formation was formed during a volcanic eruption of the Eldfell volcano. Then we drive to Storhöfði, the southern part of the island, to watch the puffins (mid-May to the end of August). After lunch in the town, we check out the Skansinn area. We observe Stafkirkjan, a Viking stave church, a lighthouse, and incredible cliffs. Next on our itinerary is an exploration of the island’s volcanic heritage at the Eldheimar Museum, built around the remains of a house submerged by lava during the 1973 eruption. We shall also walk along the slopes of the Eldheimar crater, touching still-warm stones and observing the untouched beauty of newly formed lava fields. In the late afternoon, we return to the harbor to catch the ferry to the mainland and back to Reykjavik in the evening.
