The south coast of Iceland is shaped by the violent interaction between ice and fire. The black sand was brought down from the mountains during catastrophic floods of melted water from volcanic eruptions under the glaciers. Eyjafjallajökull which erupted in 2010 is probably the most famous one but there are others more powerful to see. I think by understanding Icelandic geology you will enjoy the trip through this fantastic landscape and I will do my best to explain it. Many of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls will be on our way falling from ancient sea cliffs from the time sea level was several meters higher than it is today. We will visit an outlet glacier, and spectacular rock formations and in the summertime look for the puffins. I'm flexible and we can always adjust the agenda of the tour if necessary. Please note that in wintertime the weather can be unpredictable in this area and that can call for some changes to the tour itinerary.
- I'll pick you up in the morning at your location. - We will drive east from Reykjavik and pass through the towns of Hveragerði and Selfoss and further to Hella and Hvolsvöllur with possible short stops on the way; - Stop at Seljarlandsfoss waterfall and walk behind it if you like and maybe visit its little brother Gljúfrabúi; - Pass by the famous Eyjafjallajökul before arriving at Skógarfoss the mighty waterfall where we will have lunch and maybe hike up the stairs with 440 steps to the top of the waterfall; - Visit the Sólheimajökull glacier where we have the possibility to take a short walk on the glacier; - Drive down to the coast to visit Dyrhólaey rock formations and Reynisfjara black beach. There we might see the big Atlantic waves and the Puffins in the summertime. - Vík, the small town all by itself out there is where we turn back for home. All my tours can be customized upon request.
