Landmannalaugar: Private Jeep and hiking tour to the Icelandic HighLands

The Icelandic Highlands are the interior of the country, a vast desert, totally uninhabited with roads that are only open from mid-June to mid-September at best. This is the true Iceland, the real untouched, rugged nature of the country. It is the experience that most travelers are missing and by far my favorite one to provide to my guests. To be able to roam those remote roads, you need the proper vehicle. I have a modified LandCruiser from 2021, mounted on 33 inches tires and with a snorkel to be able to cross the unbridged rivers of the Highlands. Today we will head towards the Landmannalaugar, with the most colorful mountains, lava fields, fumaroles and hot springs, this is a truly magical place and a hiker paradise. On our way, we will also stop and visit some iconic sites. Once arrived in the Landmannalaugar, we will pick a hike that suits you wishes and fitness condition. Challenging or not, it is up to you!

We will depart from Reykjavík at 8am. After about two hours drive, we will begin to drive on the backroads of Iceland: The F-Roads. For our first stop, we will be visit Ljótipollur, an immense red volcanic crater, with a deep blue lake lying at its bottom. Ljótipollur translates to "The Ugly Puddle" which absolutely does not do any justice to this magnificent, colorful site. Then comes the best part of our tour! The Landmannalaugar. If you want a challenging hike, we can go to the top of Bláhnúkur and/or Brennisteinsalda. For an easier one, we can explore the gorge of Grænagíl and its green rhyolite walls. In any case, we will finish our hike by walking through Laugahraun, a beautiful lava field. For the most experienced hikers, we can easily combine two of those hikes. On our way back, we will stop and visit Sigöldugljúfur, also called "The valley of tears". An impressive canyon with countless waterfalls.
