Ice Caves & Fortress of Hohenwerfen - A memorable day trip from Salzburg

PLEASE NOTE: This tour is only available in the summer season (from May to Oct. ) As there is also some uphill hiking involved a little bit of fitness is required. Furthermore good shoes and warm clothes are recommended for the ice cave.

From the city of Salzburg this tour follows the Salzach river valley southwards past the old salt town Hallein to the romantic village of Werfen, which is surrounded by steep mountains of the Salzburg Alps. Closeby is the funicular station of the fortress of Hohenwerfen. This funicular leads uphill to the fortress, where the falconry show will be presented, followed by a one-hour guided tour through the fortress. The next highlight are the world's largest ice caves high up in the Tennen mountain range. By a scenic drive on a mountain road uphill, a pleasant hike and a breathtaking cable car ride this trip finally arrives at the giant ice caves. After a one-hour excursion through the ice caves by a special guide the route leads the same way back to Werfen and finally to Salzburg.
