Cawdor Castle, Clava Cairns and Culloden Battlefield

We will start this tour with a visit to the beautiful Cawdor Castle, which is linked to Shakespeare's Macbeth. I was fascinated when I first visited this place. The legend around how the castle came to be, and the holy tree that still stands marveled me. It dates from the late 14th century. It was first built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor, with the ancient medieval tower constructed around the legendary holly-tree. Wherever you look, Cawdor Castle is steeped in intrigue and history. A short drive from here will take us to the famous site of the last battle fought on British soil, Culloden Battlefield. There is a fantastic state of the art visitors center, where we have time to take in over 250yrs of history and artefacts since the Battle (and a coffee too!). We will head to Clava Cairns. This is a type of circular chamber tomb cairn from the Bronze age and a fascinating historical place dating back to 2000BC. My love for history and photography make this place an awesome spot for me!
