Hi my name is Michael and I would like to welcome you to Scotland! I was born and raised in Glasgow and have worked in the city for over 35 years in a wide ranging career including banking and education. Like you I love to travel and I have been lucky to visit the USA, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Poland, Bulgaria, the Caribbean and the United Arab Emirates. In each of these locations I make a point of exploring the culture, history and architecture of whichever city I find myself in, and I would love the opportunity to do the same for you here in Glasgow, Edinburgh or St Andrews. I have led numerous educational tours with groups ranging in size from to 4 to 40 in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, and Inverness. Further afield I have guided students across the battlefields of France and Belgium and also on thought-provoking and emotional tours of Auschwitz in Poland. Just recently I was fortunate to be one of the 21 students who qualified as a prestigious Blue Badge Guide with the Scottish Tourist Guide Association which allows me to guide in an official capacity anywhere in the country and it would be a privilege and a pleasure to share my knowledge and expertise with you through ToursByLocals in Scotland. I hope we get a chance to meet and stroll around our fascinating cities and towns as I share my passion for storytelling and give you a unique experience to leave you with wonderful memories of some of Scotland's favourite destinations. Thank you! Michael * Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from University of Stirling * 35 years working in Glasgow * 10 years guiding experience * Clean UK drivers licence

Let me show you a side of Glasgow you will not get on any other tour. Glasgow is a city rich in history. Some of Britain's, and indeed the world's, greatest ideas and inventions hail from here. The work of celebrated architects can be seen on virtually every corner of the city centre. Sadly, until very recently, a crucial part of that history had been glossed over - the source of much of the money upon which the city was built - the Atlantic Slave Trade. Proportionally, Scots owned more slaves and plantations than most of continental Europe. In 2019 Glasgow City Council commissioned the University of Glasgow to carry out a study to examine the city's connection to the Atlantic Slave Trade. This tour will allow you to see the startling results of that investigation in person on the streets of Glasgow.
- We will meet in the centre of Glasgow in George Square or at a location more convenient to you. - Glasgow's George Square is the perfect place to start this tour as we take a look at the startling amount of statues in the city centre of men who benefited directly from the proceeds of the Atlantic Slave Trade. - Our walk through Glasgow city centre will take in some of the city's most impressive buildings and monuments as we reveal the true story behind the money that built these properties. Some of the sights will include. . . * Glasgow Cathedral * Tolbooth Steeple * City Halls * Ramshorn Church * Tobacco Merchants House * Gallery of Modern Art * City Chambers We will finish out tour with a 7 minute subway journey to the West End to visit the University of Glasgow and I can leave you to enjoy the trendy bars and restaurants of Ashton Lane or we can return to the city centre together on the subway. I am more than happy to adjust or customize the tour to suit your particular needs. Just let me know.
