Did you know that gold of Baltic Sea is amber? We have the biggest International Amber Fair in the world. In the museum there is 40 mln old lizard trapped in a piece of amber. What is the biggest brick church in the world? St Mary's Church in Gdansk, of course! Big Church and next to that there is The Beer Street. Johannes Hevelius who comes from Gdansk was famous astronomer but brewer and businessman as well. Gdansk is also the symbolic place where World War II began in Poland. 90% of historic part of the city was destroyed but it was rebuild. Gdansk is the birthplace of Solidarity movement and the city where Lech Walesa lives. The other famous peope from Gdansk are Gabriel Fahrenheit (physicist) and Günter Grass (writer). One thousand years of Gdansk history and only half day tour. That's a challange. Once when I was in USA I rented a car. Meeting in Gdansk city centre (hotel or railway/bus station). - We start at Highland Gate. - Walk to Golden Gate and Długa (The Long Street). - We see old tenements and Old Town Hall on the way. - Stop by Gdansk landmark - Neptun fountain. - Continue walking along Długi Targ (The Long Market St). - Turn to Dlugie Pobrzeze (The Long Shore) to see The Old Harbour Crane - another city landmark. - We come back to picturesque Mariacka (St Mary's St). - We see St. Mary's Basilica at the end of the street. 15 min. walk to World War II Musuem.
