Hello Dear Travellers! My name is Ania (Anna) and I would like to invite you to visit the city of Gdansk with me. I love history (especially medieval and 20-cenutary) culture and art. I have lived, studied and worked abroad so I am multilingual. I speak English (I studied in English and had an office job in the UK), Spanish (I graduated in Spanish Philology, I did my internship in Spain and performed field research in South America), Dutch (I lived and studied there) and a bit of Japanese (I studied it in the UK and Japan). I am an English, Spanish and Dutch speaking tour guide working in Tri- City (Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia). I love guiding people from over the world especially in small groups. Napoleon called Gdansk "a key to everything". Here in 1980 after a large strike a Solidarity Trade Union starter with a leader Lech Walesa. The place is both special for people who enjoy art, history and unique architecture. I am happy to tailor your tour to your requirements. I am also available for group bookings and private tours. Hope to see you soon in Gdansk, Poland! I am a certified guide for: *Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot *the European Solidarity Center in Gdansk *the Emigration Museum in Gdynia *the Stutthof Concentration Camp I do not have any restrictions in regard to my guiding, I can offer a full range of experiences

Overview of your Gdansk tour

The small peninsula of Westerplatte is a symbolic place where World War 2 began. Now we know that actually a few minutes earlier the first shots were fired in another Polish city. For Adolf Hitler, Westerplatte was a very important target since he wanted Gdansk to only be German and not a Free City as it had been between the first and Second World Wars. The Nazis were so confident of rapidly defeating the 200 Polish soldiers that on the 1st of September 1939, the morning newspapers already announced that the battle for Westerplatte was over. In fact they ended up fighting for 7 long days. The tour will take 4 hours and you will see places connected with the beginning of the WW2.

Anna, our guide, (I may not have the spelling exactly right) felt like someone we could have adopted into our family—she genuinely just wants to make people happy. We were originally scheduled for 9:00 a.m., but because of the cold we pushed it to 11:00. This particular tour wasn’t even on her standard list, but at our request she tailored it perfectly: in four hours, she walked us through the Solidarity movement and the broader history of Gdańsk and Poland. She did a beautiful job, using maps and her deep knowledge (she mentioned having a background in business). She explained how Poland, at various times, effectively ceased to exist as an independent state, was later controlled by outside powers, and after World War II became part of the Soviet sphere as a communist state. She described life under martial law in the early 1980s, when people were restricted in movement, subject to surveillance and interrogation, and faced shortages of food and basic goods—many people wearing the same few types of clothing. It was striking to hear this while thinking about how, at the same time, I was in California protesting the Vietnam War and enjoying university life. She then walked us through how Poland broke free from communism in 1989, when a unique political opening allowed the Solidarity movement to push for democratic change. Today, Poland is part of the European Union, but it has chosen not to adopt the euro, allowing it to keep the złoty and maintain independent control over its monetary policy.

Fabulous tour of 20th century Gdansk, including WW1, WW2, the last and Solidarity eras. Well-paced and complete.

Ania organized a great day for our three couple group from an Oceania cruise ship. We really wanted to understand how things were in East Germany, and her personal knowledge plus her professional knowledge were perfect. We also loved our time in Gdansk, even though we had visited before a number of years ago. She also organized a wonderful car and driver for the day. Very moving, and memorable. Way way better than a long bus ride both ways to Berlin.

Excellent tour from Klaipeda. Our guide Ania was really thoughtful in organizing the itinerary. She was clearly a "Local Expert" which really enhanced our tour. Our group wasn't looking for the standard tour and we received far more insight through engaging Ania and Tours by Locals. Lithuania, Klaipeda and the Baltic are very complicated regions….. do yourself the service of engaging a skilled guide. It was the right decision for our group.

Your Gdansk tour itinerary

During our trip we will see some remaining barracks and ruins of blockhouses. I will show you how it looked during the first days of September 1939. After visiting Westerplatte we will go to the Old Town of Gdansk to see the Post Office building which was also attacked by Nazis on the 1st of September 1939 and its defenders were sentenced to death by judges even though such sentences did not exist in the laws of the Free City of Gdansk. The tour will take 4 hours.
