Hi, my name is Raul, I am a native of the Yucatan and I am married with 2 kids. Since I was a young kid I have always loved history, languages and I think of myself as a very service oriented person. It is working as a tour guide that I feel fulfilled. I have a bachelor degree in hospitality and business management and I have been working in the tourism industry since I was in high-school. I am a certified tour guide since 2009 and I guide tours in Spanish, English and French in the whole of the southeast of Mexico. During my training to become a licensed guide I was guided around all the Mayan archeological sites of the Yucatan state by the archeologists who were on those years in charge of the restoration of those sites, I am also a member of a continuous education program focused on Mayan archeological sites of Mexico which is provided by the University of Yucatan (UADY) in agreement with the Tourism Bureau of the state (SEFOTUR). In 2018 I was awarded as the tour guide with the best reviews from clients by one of the best mexican travel companies and I have 10 year experience working for high-end british travel companies. Among the subjects I master and I am passionate about are: the ancient Maya civilization (I am a Mayan person myself), the unique natural formations of the Yucatan called "cenotes", the old colonial architecture of Mexico, the old sisal fiber plantations of the Yucatan and the common habits of the most common birds that come to the Yucatan peninsula to nest or to rest during their migrations from the north of the Americas to the south of the Americas. If you come to Progreso in a cruise ship I cannot pick you up at the cruise ramp but I can meet you at the LIGHTHOUSE of Progreso which is located right outside of where the cruiseship shuttle drops you off.

Overview of your Merida tour

Uxmal is according to the experts, one of the most beautiful sites of ancient Mexico and it has also been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After we see the site at your own pace we will stop to see the remains of a sisal fiber plantation (sisal fiber is extracted from an agave plant and the comercialization of this fiber made the Yucatan the richest state of Mexico in the late XIX and early XX century). Before driving back to Merida or Progreso, we will stop for a refreshing swim in one of the thousands of crystal clear water natural formations that are unique of Mexico called Cenotes. According to the list "The one hundred things we have to do before we die" swimming in a cenote is considered one of those things we have to do before we die!!!

This was our second tour with Raul and it didn't disappoint. Uxmal was an amazing site to visit and probably one of my favourites. Raul helped bring it to life in a friendly and professional way, without making it too over whelming with too much information. We also visited Kabah which was also just as interesting, but far less busy. We ended up not swimming in the cenote, the stairs just looked too unstable for our liking (not good if you are afraid of heights!). The abandoned Hacienda was such a special visit, as a designer it is brimming with potential for restoration (deep pockets required!) and those original tiled floors, just gorgeous. Raul is such a lovely person and very easy to get along with, he is one of the best guides we had on our month long trip to Mexico, we highly recommend him.

I appreciated Raul's availability on short notice for this trip to Uxmal and another temple, with round-trip transportation from Progreso, which was our cruise's port-of-call. Raul was exceptionally well-informed about Mayan ancient civilizations and unlike some other guides, accompanied us as we gingerly climbed various heights. I'd recommend him without hesitation to anyone who is similarly interested in ancient cultures. The only unfortunate aspect of our experience was not Raul's fault, so I did not deduct any points from the rating. He took us to a lunch spot where several tour buses had stopped, so the expectation was that this would be a safe bet for us. Unfortunately, my partner ordered the pudding for dessert while I got fruit, and she was in some mild G/I distress for the next day as a result. Perhaps it was not adequately refrigerated; it's hard to know. We concluded that it was the pudding because that was the only part of the meal where we did not eat the same food. Otherwise, every other aspect of the tour was enjoyable.

Uxmal is a fabulous place to visit so don’t miss it! We spent a day at Uxmal, swimming in a cenote and visiting an old hacienda. It was a wonderful day out. This was our second day out with Raul and just a good as the first. He is a fantastic guide. Really well informed and knowledgeable, safe and considerate driver, makes everything come alive for you. Moreover he is easy to be with, with a good sense of humour, engaging personality and he is very easy to talk and chat with. We would recommend him for any type of party and as a woman I would feel happy and safe spending a day with Raul on my own if I was travelling solo.

Raul’s impeccable timing and astute selection of visiting spots make for a comfortable yet deep experience. While he’s clearly knowledgeable about his regional history, he only shares relevant details and context at the perfect moment. Throughout the tour, he was incredibly relatable and warm, demonstrating his years of experience in the hospitality industry through subtle and smart flexibility. The vehicle was spotless, and the driving was professional. Raul has set a high bar for our next guide! Highly recommend.

We are so grateful we booked with Raul for an outstanding tour of Uxmal, a local cenote and a visit to an abandoned sisal factory. Raul is extremely knowledgeable about all of the places we visited especially the spectacular Uxmal an ancient Mayan Temple civilization. Next we stopped for a swim at a small cenote, not touristy in any way for a nice swim in the crystal blue waters. Very refreshing! Finally a stop at an abandoned sisal factory that at one time was the center of a highly successful and worldwide trade in sisal rope production. Throughout our time we enjoyed wonderful conversations with Raul about Merida, Progreso and life in Yucatán. Raul was very flexible with our schedule, needing an early departure from our hotel and return to the ship. He modified our stops and we never felt rushed in any way. Raul is outstanding in every respect and we highly recommend him!

There are not enough words to describe what a great time we had with Raul!! He was fabulous and so knowledgeable. Had we gone to Uxmal on our own we would have not learned near what we found out about the Mayans and their culture! Raul made the trip all about what we wanted to do and it was fabulous!! We learned so much about the Yucatan and its history!! I highly highly recommend Raul if you are going to be in Merida!!! Thank you for a remarkable and memorable trip!!
