If you have already seen the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum and many other sites but you haven't visited the below streets, squares and churches which lie as a hidden city, this tour is for you! The tour begin with the visit of St. Clement's Basilica (with subterranean levels), located a stone's throw away from the Colosseum. This is a unique place for experiencing an archaeological timeline from Ancient Rome to the beginning of Christianity and the Middle Ages, a stratification through the centuries of buildings and monuments. Next you will experience the archaeological site of Roman Houses of the Caelian Hill: this archaeological complex below the Basilica of St. John and Paul cover many different layers of housing, from the 2nd to the 4th centuries AD, particularly interesting for the original pagan and christian frescoes (closed on Tuesdays and Thursday).
1 - Basilica of St. Clement: a 12th-century Basilica decorated with one of the most splendid mosaics in the city, I will take you down a staircase into a ancient world where through three deeper levels, you will find yourself in different places as in a 4th century early christian church or in one of the most interesting underground sanctuary where the Persian God Mithra- brought to Rome by the Roman legions posted in the Eastern provinces- was worshipped. 2 - Roman Houses of the Caelian Hill: this archaeological complex below the Basilica of St. John and Paul represent one of the most fascinating places in underground Rome together with the excavations of St. Clement's Basilica, due to the extraordinary state of conservation of the frescoed rooms . NOTE that the Roman Houses are closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays, alternatively I will suggest several options of underground Rome that are worth visiting to make an unforgettable experience!
