Cretan Villages Circular Walk

Discover the heart of rural Crete on this gentle 7 km circular walk from Douliana to Gavalochori and back. Douliana is a small traditional settlement with preserved folk architecture and views over olive‑covered valleys. From here we stroll through peaceful paths amid olive groves, vineyards, and fields toward Gavalochori, a historic village with roots stretching back at least a millennium. Gavalochori’s folk architecture reflects Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences and the village was officially protected for its cultural value. Here we visit the Folklore Museum in a traditional stone building and explore the remains of the old stone olive mill, offering insight into local life past and present. After exploring the village, we return along the shaded old path, passing the cave chapel of Agios Ioannis before completing the loop in Douliana.

We begin with pickup from your accommodation and a short drive to Douliana in the fertile Apokoronas region. From the village square we set off on a 7 km circular walk toward Gavalochori, passing through quiet countryside with olive groves and vineyards. In Gavalochori—an ancient village named after medieval noble families and shaped by Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman eras—we visit the Folklore Museum, housed in a traditional stone building, and the remains of the historic stone olive mill. After exploring, we walk back toward Douliana along the shaded old trail, stopping by the cave chapel of Agios Ioannis. For anyone preferring a shorter walk, you can wait in Gavalochori while the group completes the loop and returns to pick up the car. At the end, enjoy a drink in Douliana or a short drive to nearby Almyrida for lunch and a swim.
