Your Guide: Professional Bio I was born and raised in the Old City of Chania, Crete. I am a professional mountaineer and mountain instructor with an IFMGA certification. Throughout my professional career, I have had the honor of guiding people of all ages, from beginners to experienced mountaineers, as well as well-known public figures such as politicians, journalists, and artists. The Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has on occasion entrusted me with his personal safety for mountain climbing, hiking, and ski tours. Professional Experience I have over 30 years of experience as a mountain guide, having worked for companies and organizations such as: Trekking Plan Outdoor Activities & Mountain Services The North Face Europe (3 years) Various tourist offices and Alpine Clubs For the past two years, I have also served as a hiking leader instructor at the DIEK public school in Chania. I have summited well-known peaks in the Himalayas, including: Baruntse (7,161m) Mera Peak (6,470m) Island Peak (6,186m) Tharpu Chuli (5,800m) Naya Kanga (5,844m) I have also worked as a mountain guide in Greece, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, and the western USA. Credentials & Expertise Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Sport Science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Mountaineering and Ski Touring Instructor for the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering & Climbing UIAGM/IFMGA Candidate for Professional Mountain Guide French Avalanche Rescuer Training Member of the Alpine Clubs of Chania, Athens, and the French Club Alpin de Chamonix My Philosophy My love for nature, mountains, and adventure began in childhood. At 12, I took my first alpine skiing lessons, and at 14, I started competing in ski and road cycling races. For me, engaging in mountain activities is not just a hobby, but a way of life that I want to share with people. Through contact with the wild beauty of the mountains and as members of a team, we learn to operate with companionship and solidarity, setting and achieving new goals. Safety is of primary importance, which is why I carry a satellite phone and a first aid kit on all my hiking trips. Services I offer weekly programs, daily trips, and courses for all fitness levels and ages, in private small groups or for families. My programs combine safety and enjoyment, as we walk through gorges, on hidden paths, and alongside rivers. I am active in mountaineering, ski touring, rock and ice climbing, hiking, trail running, and swimming. Disclaimer: I am a professional mountain guide, but I am not a licensed guide and will not be able to guide you inside historical monuments.

Overview of your Chania tour

Born in Chania, I am an internationally certified IFMGA Mountain Guide. I have crossed Samaria over 1,000 times. Despite leading technical expeditions in the Alps and Himalayas, Samaria still captivates me. If you want to experience its true essence with elite safety, this tour is masterfully designed for you. IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFO & FOOTWEAR This is a demanding 16km wilderness hike on rocky terrain. A solid level of fitness is required. Proper hiking shoes are mandatory—attempting this trail in tennis shoes is like driving a city car on an off-road Jeep track; it compromises safety and slows progression. If you have knee, ankle, or back issues, please evaluate your condition carefully. SAFETY NOTE: I carry a professional medical first-aid kit and a satellite rescue beacon. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, severe allergies, or carry emergency medication, please notify me prior to the hike so I can integrate it into our safety plan.

Vangelis is a brilliant guide. He is really professional and experienced as well as a very friendly and considerate guide. Vangelis was my private guide for the Samaria Gorge walk, just me and him for the day and he is very easy company, sharing interesting information and also being guided by me about the pace I like to walk at. I really do recommend Vangelis, whether you are 1 person or a small group wanting a private guide. He is punctual and very well organised. I don't think you would find anyone better to be your guide for any hike or walk, I thoroughly recommend him.

My friend and I wanted to hike the Samaria Gorge and thought about doing it on our own, but we are so happy we went with Vangelis. He met us at our hotel in historic Chania, took us to an Inn for breakfast, coffee and sandwiches to tuck into our packs. . We parked at the start of the Gorge and Vangelis guided us through the ticket process. From the start of the trail forward he set a pace we could keep up with. Along the way he gave us history of the gorge, kept us updated on what the expect and greeted all the park rangers by name. The Gorge is beautiful and we had great weather. The end was where having a guide really paid off. We swam, had time for dinner, and caught the boat back with little stress. Vangelis got us back to the car and back to our hotel avoiding the mass crush of busses at the ferry. Vangelis made a challenging hike a great memory. Ask him for poles if you like.

We had a great day with Vangelis! He is very knowledgeable and helped our family complete the hike at the gorge. We appreciated his kindness and patience with our questions before starting the day. It is a long, challenging hike, but beautiful and worth it!

As fate would have it, rains a few days before this tour had damaged the lower portion of the trail, and it was entirely closed for our intended hiking day. We asked Vangelis to take us instead to hike the Agia Irinis Gorge, which is about half the distance of Samaria Gorge but also very challenging, scenic, and with far fewer people. It turned out to be a fine alternative, and Vangelis was very helpful guiding my traveling companion who unlike me had no experience with the type of rocky terrain encountered here. He continually checked with us on the pace and need for breaks to drink water, etc. The trail disappears into boulders at several points, and would have been difficult without a guide to find the best route down. He also took us on an informative 2+hour walking tour of old town Chania upon return, which filled the extra hours hiking Samaria would have taken. Highly recommend!

Vangelis is one of the best tour guides I have used. He reached out well in advance of this tour and quickly responded to questions -- everything from the type of shoes to wear (hiking shoes are a must!) to what to bring with us. As the excursion drew near, he monitored the weather in case we needed to change the hike at all, which we did, the night before the hike. Not many guides will give guests this much attention. I rate Vangelis A+++ !!!

Vangelis is an excellent guide-punctual, helpful, knowledgeable, nice. Kept us on schedule. Samaria gorge is a great hike. We recommend it. We did it downhill. You need to know somethings. Sturdy shoes are a must as this is a very rocky hike. Poles should be used for some hikers (Vangelis has them). The all day hike including the initial car ride, the 7 hour hike, the optional bus ride (we did it at 2 euro per person), the boat ride, the taxi and ride back took 13 hours. It was worth it- all very tired.

Your Chania tour itinerary

Our expedition begins with a personalized meeting at your location in Chania or Rethymnon. We transition directly to the dramatic entrance of the National Park at Xyloskalo (1,250m) for a local coffee and photos before clearing the trailhead. The trek commences with a steep descent through ancient forests, surrounded by the towering White Mountains (2,200m+). Walking at your preferred pace, we make strategic stops where I share deep local lore, history, and personal stories from decades of mountain tracking. At the abandoned village of Samaria, we take an extended rest for traditional Cretan snacks. After completing our 16km hike through jaw-dropping riverbeds and the famous "Iron Gates" canyon, we emerge in Agia Roumeli. Enjoy a swim in the Libyan Sea and an authentic, home-cooked lunch at a family-run tavern. We conclude with a spectacular 60-minute coastal ferry ride to Sougia, returning to your base by roughly 8:30 PM.
