I love being in nature and I have always been fascinated by animals, plants and beautiful landscapes. I also feel the need to share the things I love, especially with those who can appreciate them. And Crete has so many natural beauties to discover! My passion for Crete's beautiful nature led me to work as an eco guide in the magical natural areas of Crete and the Aegean for the past ten years. I have always preferred small and flexible private tours in order to share the real taste of the local nature and culture, taking visitors to the same places where I would take my friends. It is very important to combine sharing knowledge and information while having the nice relaxing time to absorb everything that Cretan nature has to offer. This is your holiday after all, and we all know how important this is! Imbros is an 8 km-long, impressive gorge that begins in the village of Imbros and ends in Komitades, just 7 km from the Libyan Sea in southern Crete. I’ve always seen this gorge as a safe haven—its steep walls have sheltered wildlife and people in times of war. The hike is relatively easy yet rewarding, passing through a classic Cretan landscape of cypresses, oak, and maple trees. At its narrowest, the gorge is just 2 meters wide, with walls rising up to 300 meters. Parts of the old stone trail connecting the villages are still visible. Shorter and less crowded than the world-famous Samaria, Imbros offers a relaxed way to enjoy the local flora, fauna, and stunning views. Our hike starts at about 750 meters above sea level and takes around three hours. After exiting the gorge, we drive to Sfakia, where you can enjoy lunch and a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of South Crete.

The Imbros Gorge Hike was one of the highlights of our recent vacation! Mel reached out soon after booking to confirm and ask where to meet us, and got in touch over WhatsApp the day before. Mel made sure we had everything we needed before the hike (water, bathroom break, etc.). The downhill ~4 mile hike was an amazing experience, a beautiful and peaceful break from the crowds of tourist season in Greece. Mel gave us a lot of information on the plants and animals we encountered and the history and culture of the area. The hike ended at a beautiful taverna overlooking the sea where we enjoyed fresh, delicious Cretan specialties to refuel before heading back to Chania. Mel was flexible and accommodating to a change in our schedule requiring us to be back earlier than planned. We would absolutely recommend this tour and any tour by Mel for a taste of the real, natural Crete!
Mel is an amazing guide! She met us at our hotel and went with the flow when our breakfast took longer than anticipated. On the drive to Imbros Gorge, she shared lots of great info about the history and politics of the area, and made a personal connection with each of us. Throughout the day she took our pics, adjusted to our pace, and was incredibly warm, pleasant, and informed. Following our hike she took us to a stunning, off-the-beaten-track beach that was gorgeous. I hope our paths cross again.
We had a very enjoyable day with Mel on the Imbros Gorge walk. We could just relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery on the drive to and from the gorge.The gorge walk itself was lovely. A real pleasure to hear the birdsong and be amongst the lush trees and plants in such a dramatic setting with only a few other walkers.Mel was knowledgeable and good company. We recommend the trip for anyone who wants to go beyond Chania and see more of the landscape without being on an impersonal busy coach tour.

We’ll begin the day with a pickup from your hotel and drive for about one hour to the entrance of Imbros Gorge. This is where our hike starts. The walk takes roughly three hours, depending on our pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop for photos, enjoy the scenery, and explore the fragrant Cretan herbs along the way. After we exit the gorge in the village of Komitades, we’ll continue by car to the coastal area of Sfakia. Here, you’ll have time to enjoy a relaxing lunch by the sea. We usually stay for about two hours, but the exact duration is entirely up to you—you set the rhythm of the day. Be sure to bring water, light snacks for the walk, hiking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. If you’d like to swim, pack your swimming gear as well—you can safely leave it in the car while we’re hiking. From Sfakia, we’ll drive back to the north coast to return to our starting point, where our tour comes to an end.
