I love Munich and the region around us, including the beautiful alpine lakes and the soaring cliffs of our Bavarian Alps! Munich is an architectural museum, a global economic and business outperformer, the home of world-class music of every kind, and the site of literally thousands of years of history, from the Celts to the Romans and Germanics, and through our 13 bad years of fascism into the modern era of peace and democracy. Let me tell you stories of triumph and tragedy, atrocities and atonement, kings and castles, and modern Germany - or any topic that occurs to you as we go. I have made it my business over the 40 years I have been resident here to live and breathe these topics every day. I would love to show you round this gem of a city or the picture-book sites in our neighborhood. Native English and fluent German. 40 years resident in Munich. Highly knowledgeable and experienced.

Adolf Hitler lived in Munich for many years and, after hijacking a local political party and attempting a coup d'etat here in 1923, he called Munich the "Capital City of the Movement". On this walking tour, we will visit many sites in the city that are relevant to Munich's dark past. We will tell the story of the conditions under which the Nazi movement emerged in Munich, the rise of Hitler, the failure of appeasement, the outbreak of World War II, wartime Munich, and Germany's atonement after the war.
âą I will meet you at your hotel at a time of your choosing, and we will go together on foot from there. âą We visit sites where important events in the emergence of the Nazi party and the rise of Hitler occurred, including the site of the 1923 "Beer Hall Putsch" and "Dodger's Alley". âą Later, we retrace the steps of Chamberlain at the "FĂŒhrerbau", where the Munich Agreement was signed and discuss the failure of appeasement. Then, we go around the corner to stand on the "Königsplatz" where many Nazi rallies took place. âą Time allowing, we visit the University district to tell the tragic story of Sophie Scholl and to see the memorial to the White Rose Society. âą I will also show you a fascinating secret of Munich's Nazi past that is "hidden in plain view". âą Finally, we will discuss Germany's atonement for the war, including visiting the Eternal Flame and the new Synagoge. âą As we go, there will also be many references to the beautiful, vibrant, and culturally rich Munich of before and after the war.

This is a walking tour as our Old City is almost entirely Pedestrian Zone. If need be, we may make a short public transport or taxi connection. If your hotel is not walkable from the city center, just let us know and we will make a plan to get you there!
