Combine a tour of Helsinki with Hvittrask, birthplace and childhood home of legendary US architecht and designer, Eero Saarinen, the man behind many of America's iconic landmarks such as the Gateway Arch in St Louis. The former home of famous Finnish Architechts Eliel Saarinen (father of Eero Saarinen ) , Lindgren and Gesellius was built in 1902 on a hill overlooking a lake and is an outstanding example of Finnish National Romantic architecture. A short drive from Helsinki, the stunning residence is located on the shores of a lake surrounded by picturesque countryside and magnificent forests. After a tour of this unique residence you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of its delightful grounds. On our return to Helsinki we will explore the citys architectural heritage with a special emphasis on the works of Saarinen and other great architechts. NOTE: This Tour runs only from Wednesdays to Sundays. There are NO TOUR departures on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Although specializing in architecture and design, Maria's tour of Helsinki and the Saarinen compound at Hvittrask was so much more than that, including Finnish political, religious, and cultural history. With a driver to keep us moving, we saw and learned more in a limited amount of time than I could have ever imagined. Seeing Hvittrask, the home designed by Eliel Saarinen outside Helsinki for his family with all of the furnishings intact in a beautiful landscape setting was the highlight for me!
Our time in Helsinki was so enjoyable. Maria was a font of information. We recommend spending part of your time outside the city as we did. It made the day so relaxing and we saw beautiful countryside. But Helsinki was a great city also. Maria was a great addition to our day. We would highly recommend her as a guide.
Main Milestones: 1) Meet at hotel or cruise harbor with guide plus transport and begin tour. 2) Drive to Hvittrask with commentary on route . This is a journey of about 45 minutes. 3) Visit Hvittrask residence and grounds 4) Return drive to Helsinki 5) Tour of Helsinki . We will visit the major landmarks and review the architectural and design legacy of the Saarinen family dotted all around the city. 6) Tour completed. I will accompany you back to your hotel or cruise harbor.
