I'm Peter, a licensed Helsinki guide who is interested in the history of this land, inspired by Helsinki's combination of architectural styles and always searches for new landmarks in the capital. There are certain Helsinki gems that specifically inspire me in the capital yet are out of the beaten path: the Seurasaari island museum with wooden houses that were brought here from different regions in Finland, the Sibelius monument, the wooden Kamppi chapel with a combination of 3 types of wood, the Rock Church, the Eira district from the 1910s and much more. This being said, your wishes can be customized to more unique spots to visit, such as for example the Helsinki Winter Garden opened in 1893, or the Finlandia concert hall, a masterpiece of Alvar Aalto. As for Porvoo, I am fascinated by poems of Runeberg, first Finnish national poet who never wrote in Finnish. I like to visit Nasin kivi hill that provides astonishing old city view and medieval church that was first Catholic and now welcomes Lutheran Finns and Swedes in its walls. I have a Master's in Classical philology, thus I see the power in words. I also hold a Master's in Religious studies from Helsinki University, and as for profession I have decided that history and Finnish culture are my priorities. This journey takes you through two contrasting cities! In Porvoo, Finland's 2nd oldest city, you’ll step back in time to experience its quiet history-filled atmosphere, walking along cobbled stone streets with old wooden houses painted in various colours and even get to visit a medieval church with a dramatic backstory. In Helsinki, you'll enjoy seeing how 19th-century Neo-classical architecture meets the functional, modern design of the 20th century. Together, we'll uncover the elegance of Neo-classicism around Market Square and Senate Square with its iconic Helsinki Cathedral. Moreover, you’ll get acquainted with Finnish romantism in Helsinki's Eira district, where the architecture, reminiscent of medieval castles, includes picturesque villas, residential homes, and even the local hospital. You’ll undoubtedly notice the striking difference both in the pace of life and in the architectural styles between both cities. This tour is of course customizable to your personal interests and wishes.
Your Helsinki tour itinerary
-We'll start our tour after I pick you up from a place of your choice & embark on 45-min drive to Porvoo. -On arrival, we'll go to the Market Square, surrounded by houses from 1763. -Afterwards, we'll pass by the Brunberg chocolate shop. -What follows next (and depending on the day's opening hours) would be a visit to Porvoo Cathedral, which dates back to 1450s. -Then we'll have a lunch or coffee break upon your choice! -We’ll later return to Helsinki, where we’ll admire the main sights located on Mannerheim street: Finlandia Hall, National Museum, Oodi library & the Finnish Parliament, before heading to the Eira district. -Finally we’ll stop at the Neo-classical Senate Square with the Helsinki Cathedral, which we'll proceed to step into. -To wrap up the tour, we’ll pass by the Market Square once more to marvel at the of Uspenski Cathedral, the Presidential palace & the City Hall. -We'll finally drop you off at an agreed place. *The order of visits may be changed based on the day's opening hours.
