From the Helsinki city center it's a scenic 15 minutes ferry trip to Suomenlinna sea fortress island. Sea fortress of Suomenlinna (UNESCO World Heritage Site) has a unique atmosphere all year around. The fortress was established in 1747 to reinforce the defences of Sweden against Russia (Finland was part of Sweden). Today, historical Suomenlinna is the home of Finnish Naval Academy and 900 Helsinki residents as well.
