Best decision we made was to have Leo be our tour guide in Santiago to show us his city. His welcome to Chile made the beginning of our vacation extra special! He instantly made you feel like a friend, and we appreciated that he could speak in excellent English for our private tour. It was nice to have his son JP as our driver in a large SUV with air conditioning waiting for us when we got out at different spots around the city. Our family enjoys having a local to talk to, and Leo knows a lot about his country, its history, and the city of Santiago. We got to go into a history museum and to do a walking tour of the historic district and the Main Square and Market including going into the beautiful Cathedral. We always enjoy local traditions, and before going on the funicular for a spectacular view of the whole city of Santiago, we had Leo's favorite childhood drink, a local favorite peach drink called a Mote Con Huesillo with a peach half in it and cooked wheat at the bottom. Delicious and a special memory! The funicular incline ride up to see the Virgin Mary looking down over Santiago and the cable car down really gave us a perspective of how large Santiago is. When Leo found out we wanted to see the remains of the Spanish Fortress, he even took us there when rush hour had started before taking us back to our hotel. We recently spent a wonderful afternoon in Santiago with Leo. In additional to showing us neighborhoods and famous sites, he gave us a great socio-political and economic introduction to modern Chile. He visited the Museum of Memory and Human Rights with us and shared his perspective as someone who lived through the time of the dictatorship and repression. He had a car and driver, which allowed him to focus on talking with us and providing information rather than having to concentrate on the road and traffic. Highly recommend!
