Salem Harbor was the center of activity and source of great wealth for Salem in the Great Age of Sail. Derby Wharf extends 2,000 feet into the harbor and contained several shipping-related buildings like the Pedrick sail loft shown here.

The Salem Town Hall was built in 1815 to accommodate town meetings and a marketplace for agricultural produce. A weekly market is still held here from spring to fall.

John Hancock, the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, twice Governor of Massachusetts and a very wealthy merchant, kept his counting house money in this safe.

From this second floor balcony on the Old State House, the people of Boston first heard the reading of the Declaration of Independence on 18 July 1776. The City of Chicago offered to buy and relocate the building after its 1871 fire destroyed thousands of buildings!

Benjamin Franklin's boyhood neighborhood of the early 1700s includes Marshall Street, built by a local well-to-do but lazy mill owner.

The oldest extant home on Beacon Hill is a two-family wooden residence built by free African Americans- one the soldier who led a Black militia company responsible for protecting Boston businesses from British Loyalists during the American Revolutionary War.

Park Street Church, once the tallest building in America, has a strong abolitionist tradition of preaching with fire and brimstone. The song "America" was first sung from its steps. Billy Graham began his first crusade here in 1949.
