The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts is indeed a very unique city. This city of 120, 000 people holds with its boundaries two of the world's most famous universities: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University. Crossing the Charles River from Boston by the Red Line of the MBTA subway, we first arrive at MIT. We'll see stunning, dramatic architecture and monumental contemporary sculpture (Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and others) and point out where cutting edge research is going on. Getting back on the subway, we'll continue two more stops to Harvard. The subway delivers us directly onto the campus. This is the oldest institution of higher education in what is now the United States and was established in 1636 by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Come with me to see where famous heads of state, famous entrepreneurs and Hollywood actors spent their first year on campus!
Meet at the Boston Common Visitors Center, 139 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02108. Board Red Line subway at Park Street Station. Spectacular view of Boston as the train crosses the Charles River. (even locals look up from their phones!) Exit at Kendall Square/MIT station, tour MIT campus (about 1 hour). Board subway again proceed to Harvard Station (two stops). Tour Harvard University Campus (about 1 hour). Board Red Line train for return to Park Street Station (4 stops, approximately 10-15 minuets). Although, this tour typically begins AND ends at the Boston Common, it is highly encouraged that you consider lingering on your own at Harvard or MIT. MIT has a science and engineering museum that opened in the fall of 2022, while Harvard has an impressive art museum and Harvard Square boasts numerous restaurants, pubs and coffeeshops.
