Full Day Tour from Boston to Lexington and Concord

This is a 5 hour driving tour that will focus on the story of how the American Revolution began.

In April of 1775 the American Revolution began here in New England when the local population took up arms and fought with the powerful British Army. Starting in Boston this tour will cover the events that led up to that pivotal moment. The tour will highlight the early culture of New England that sowed the seeds of independence, the significance of the French and Indian War as a precursor to the American Revolution, the tax revolts that led to imposition of martial law and the arrival of the British Army and the legendary midnight ride of Paul Revere.

After beginning in Boston, the tour will follow the path of Paul Revere to the the town of Lexington where the first shots of the war were fired and then on to Concord where the colonists fired the "Shot Heard Round the World" and altered the course of history.

There's so much more to Salem than witch history, but I couldn't bring you here without talking about the events of 1692. I share the context of what was happening in the area around this time, and the theories of what led up to this historic event.

We'll walk through the main downtown area, visiting everything from the the witch trials memorial to the old town hall.

If you're intrigued by the trials themselves, you should go into the witch history museum.

If you'd rather skip the museum, we'll use the time wisely by visiting other parts of Salem.

I've combined these with a drive to their much loved town of Concord. Here you'll visit the family home where the book was written, and subject to availability, you'll have the chance to join a tour of the house, conducted by one of the Orchard house guides.

Options are then to visit the resting place of the Alcott family or stroll the quintessential all American, main street of Concord. Final quick stop at Walden Pond where the family would have skated on our way back to Boston.

Like its neighbor the Back Bay, the Fenway is landfill. Up until 1900, this was a brackish water tidal estuary where the Stoney Brook and the Muddy River (still) empty into the Charles River. Starting in the late 1870's, Frederick Law Olmstead was engaged by the city of Boston to devise a sanitary solution for this polluted water course and provide a park for the expanding city. With more room to grow, the Fenway quickly became the home for museums, schools and our baseball stadium Fenway Park (1912). Today, the Fenway is the most culturally rich neighborhood in the city of Boston.

Choose the 10 AM-1PM tour if: You are headed to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Museum. (note: these two museums are CLOSED on Tuesday!). Choose the 2-5 PM tour if you are going to an evening Red Sox game!

Nathaniel Hawthorne is Salem's favorite son. Famed and admired in his own time, his reputation and stature have endured. He remains a presence in Salem today--Hawthorne Boulevard, Bela Lyon Pratt's towering statue, the Hawthorne Hotel, the House of the Seven Gables--all attest to his genius as a writer who probed the history and traditions of his hometown. Yet Hawthorne had mixed feelings about Salem and his family's long residence here. He saw the dark side of Salem in the witch trials, persisting folk customs, and the rigorous beliefs of Puritanism.

Please join me for a tour of Salem as Hawthorne knew it— his birthplace, houses where he lived and worked, places that provided the settings of his stories and novels— the Custom House, the town pump, the Witch House, wharves on the harborfront, ancient dwellings on the side streets.

We conclude with a detailed visit to the House of the Seven Gables and to Hawthorne's Birthplace.

Their family home really gives a sense into their lives and, subject to availability at the house, you'll join a tour conducted by one of the Orchard house guides. Finishing up the visit with time to browse the book shop and take some pictures.

Options are then to visit the resting place of the Alcott family or stroll the quintessential all American, main street of Concord.

Final stop (weather permitting) is Walden Pond, then along a scenic country road part of the way back to Boston.
