Hi, I’m Alasdair! I’m an Edinburgh native, and I’ve been a full-time tour guide here for nearly eight years. I’ve got a degree in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, where I also studied Medieval and Early Modern Scottish History, Classics, and History of Art. I offer walking tours of the Old Town of Edinburgh, the New Town, the National Museum of Scotland, and an architecture tour spanning both the Old and the New towns; all fully bespoke, customisable experiences tailored to your interests. Edinburgh is a beautiful city, filled with stunning views and fascinating stories, and has been at the heart of much of Scotland’s rich, chaotic, and often hilarious history. Come along and join me for the stories of Edinburgh, of Scotland, and its people." Please note my tours are only in English, though I am able to at least translate words from Scots into English. Many thanks, Alasdair

The goal of this tour is to provide you with a comprehensive overview of Scotland’s history, from the archaeological traces of its earliest inhabitants to the present day. It’s a complete journey through the history of the Scottish people, delivered in a lighthearted and engaging way by an experienced guide. Join me for a tour of the Scottish section of the National Museum of Scotland. We’ll begin in the basement, exploring the first settlers, and make our way chronologically through the Romans, the Vikings, the emergence of a national identity, the Wars of Independence, the Stuarts, the Enlightenment, and finally, modern Scotland. With a background in English Literature and History, I not only know the story—I know how to bring it to life.
Come and join me for a tour of the Scottish section of the National Museum of Scotland. We'll start in the basement with the first peoples to get here, weave our way up chronologically through the Romans, the Vikings, the formation of a national identity, through the Wars of Independence, the Stuarts, the Enlightenment, right up to where we are in modern Scotland.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
I will not be driving on these tours, but I can happily either advise on public transport, recommend a private hire, or meet you at your accommodation. There is elevator access to every level of the museum, so all wheelchair friendly. Kids of all age are welcome on the tour, but please bear in mind that while it's a lighthearted delivery, there is quite a lot of history in 2.5 hours, and you will know yourself the attention span of your kids. If it's a baby you're bringing there are changing facilities available throughout the musuem.

My usual meeting point is at the main entrance to the National Museum, which is the gigantic set of steps to go into the original, Victorian building (the same steps from my profile pic). But I can just as easily meet you at your accommodation, or another central location.
