For the quintessential English experience nothing beats a trip to the Cotswolds! The Wolds are the rolling hills and green valleys in the heart of England; perfect pasture land for grazing the sheep, which were prized for their luxurious fleece. Wool brought great wealth to the area and it was the rich wool merchants of medieval England that built the fine towns and villages that we see today. In the 1300s King Edward III decreed that the Chancellor of England should sit on a wool sack in parliament made from Cotswold wool , so important was it to the economy of England. Still there today I love this part of the country! It is so picturesque with it's quaint villages and magnificent wool churches with stunning Romanesque architecture, tombs of kings and princes, Come with me along The Fosse Way one of the principal Roman roads to really get into the Heart of England. I can take you away from the tourist trail for an unforgettable day out!
There are so many villages to choose from but I mainly recommend that you use your guide and driver who know the area to escape the crowds and see some hidden gems along with some of the more popular sites. My Favourite route is: • Start 9:00 for Malmesbury where we stop for the stunning Abbey doorway from the 1100s, learn about a flying monk, a tiger's snack, Mr Lincoln's relations and the tomb of the first king of all England. • On from here to Bibury - very popular but once described as the prettiest village in all England. • On to Lunch in a village pub - the church here has the strangest tombs from the time of Elizabeth I •Then time for a stroll. Choose from the prehistoric stone circle and standing stones, country park or the Roman Villa • Take the scenic route back towards your hotel with a stop for a cream tea on the way. For a day out from London we can meet you at Moreton in Marsh station and explore the northern Cotswolds, Then back on the train and back to London for supper.
Tell your guide which places matter to you, skip what doesn't, and tailor the experience for your group's needs. Not finding what you want? Message your guide to build something unique.
