Today we took the tour of the sublime Cotswalds with Matthias. We were a group of 5 ranging in age from 27 to 63. He was EXCELLENT! He provided so much history of England and the area that everyone learned something. He also tied the towns we were visiting into the history he was sharing. He is engaging and very accommodating. After booking the tour, one of our party had to start using crutches. He modified the tour to accommodate this and still provided us with ample opportunity to explore the area.
Matthias is personable and a fund of new, arcane and obtuse information that made a multi generational tour spot in. He seamlessly addressed our change in rail stations, request for a picnic at Blenheim, told stories relatable to a teen as well as 71 y.o. Hands down just wonderful
Matt is Delightful, knowledgeable, and caring. Husband is vision-impaied and Matt took his arm and guided him with ease, describing clearly what there was to see. Our full day of touring lasted well after the scheduled end time.
I had the opportunity to hire Matt for three days as a birthday gift for my friends. We did the Cotswolds, Stonehenge (with Glastonbury, and a drive through Cheddar Gorge) and Bath. He picked us up from our Bristol hotel each day and delivered us back home at night. We love Matt. He is a professional guide, safe driver, shares hilarious stories, and much intriguing history. I was not planning to hire the same person for 3 consecutive days, but Matt made it too easy for me to do business with him.
The day begins in Castle Combe, which is surely one of the most photographed villages in all of England and often considered one of the very prettiest. Little has changed here for centuries - no street lights or TV aerials. This mediaeval gem is famous for its picturesque cottages and babbling brook. Explore the conservation village of Lacock. Unsurprisingly, the medieval homes and charming shops here are another very popular filming location and its former abbey is also the famed birthplace of photography. After lunch wander along the river and canal in Bradford-on-Avon, famous for the wool and weaving industry that spanned six centuries. Marvel at the town's medieval Tithe Barn and the colourful narrow boats moored in the canal. Iford Manor Gardens are a genuine hidden secret, where you can step into another world. This privately owned paradise, set within a breathtaking valley, was used to film “The Secret Garden” starring Colin Firth and also period drama series “Sanditon”.
