I'm Gui (as all my friends call me), a 39-year-old local from Lisbon who loves his little corner of the world so much that I dream of making others fall in love with its cultural and historical richness. A student of Portuguese history, culture, literature, and language, I was only absent from my hometown for a year, when I decided to embraced the challenge of studying in Florence, Italy. Marveling at my country's historical and cultural connections with other countries and places around the world and over the centuries, I got lost in the labyrinth of all these intricate and constant tangents. Even today, instead of looking for a way out of them, I scrutinize every new and intriguing corner of this endless maze with the curiosity of a neophyte, aiming to call each of these new curious regions my home. I want you to discover all of my favorite places near Lisbon, in addition to Lisbon itself. From Sintra and its romantic mysticism to Cascais and its maritime voluptuousness, as well as Serra da Arrábida and its wild nature that hides corners that are both intoxicating and sacred. Then there's Óbidos and its medieval ambience, and Nazaré with its waves that crush forgotten legends & myths. We can't forget about Alcobaça and Batalha, with its Romanesque and Gothic monasteries, or about Tomar, once the capital of the Order of the Temple in Portugal. Queluz, Mafra and Ajuda and their magnanimous royal palaces are also worth mentioning, as well as the city-museum of Évora, also the best oasis for any desert. Join me on these journeys through Portugal's culture. From raw history, to cooked cuisine, scrambled architecture, tasteful music, a thousand textures literature and sweet, sour and spicy stories. As you've noticed, both Athens and Rome were known to have 7 hills. In the XVII century, a famous Portuguese friar didn't want Lisbon to fall behind those two great cities, so he started to claim that Lisbon also had 7 hills. This is just one of the many myths that are often blended with the hard facts of History to make Portugal look as great as other renowned countries, and you know what? Today, we don't need that anymore. On this tour, we will travel through those 7 hills and more, to give the right context to all those myths, and to explain why we have such a hard time balancing the 2: reality and mythology. Only to tease a bit: the myth of the 7 hills involves a classical hero, a giant monster, a spell, and one of the names that was once given to Lisbon. Come with me and I'll give you the best introduction to Lisbon in a day, where you'll get to know everything from the westernmost historic area of Belém to the ancient eastern doors of the city in Alfama; and a story that spans 25 centuries.
-After meeting, we'll drive to the Tower of Belém. -We're going to see the Discoveries Monument and the Jerónimos Monastery too. -Next, you'll be able to taste one of the tastiest pastries in the world: Pastéis de Belém. -Later, we'll drive to the city center to visit Estrela Basilica & stop at S. Roque, the 1st of the 7 hills. -After that, we'll stroll through some areas where cars aren't allowed to circulate: ·Bairro Alto ·Carmo (2nd hill) ·Santa Catarina (3rd & 4th hills) ·Chiado -We'll then have lunch in a restaurant where a regular local would too (or any other you might want to try). -After lunch, we'll drive through the other 3 hills on the eastern side of Lisbon: Santana, St. Vincent & St. Andrew. -Meanwhile, we'll find other hills worthy of our attention, such as Graça. -Next, we'll reach Alfama and have a short stroll through its narrow streets. -At last, we'll see other points of Lisbon such as Praça do Comércio, Baixa, Sé, Portas do Sol, Rossio & Liberty Avenue.
