I'm Gui (as all my friends call me), a 39-year-old local from Lisbon who loves his little corner of the world so much that I dream of making others fall in love with its cultural and historical richness. A student of Portuguese history, culture, literature, and language, I was only absent from my hometown for a year, when I decided to embraced the challenge of studying in Florence, Italy. Marveling at my country's historical and cultural connections with other countries and places around the world and over the centuries, I got lost in the labyrinth of all these intricate and constant tangents. Even today, instead of looking for a way out of them, I scrutinize every new and intriguing corner of this endless maze with the curiosity of a neophyte, aiming to call each of these new curious regions my home. I want you to discover all of my favorite places near Lisbon, in addition to Lisbon itself. From Sintra and its romantic mysticism to Cascais and its maritime voluptuousness, as well as Serra da Arrábida and its wild nature that hides corners that are both intoxicating and sacred. Then there's Óbidos and its medieval ambience, and Nazaré with its waves that crush forgotten legends & myths. We can't forget about Alcobaça and Batalha, with its Romanesque and Gothic monasteries, or about Tomar, once the capital of the Order of the Temple in Portugal. Queluz, Mafra and Ajuda and their magnanimous royal palaces are also worth mentioning, as well as the city-museum of Évora, also the best oasis for any desert. Join me on these journeys through Portugal's culture. From raw history, to cooked cuisine, scrambled architecture, tasteful music, a thousand textures literature and sweet, sour and spicy stories. No one knows a city or country without tasting specific things of their gastronomy, and you certainly won’t know Lisbon if you won’t try, for example, a bifana or prego. You might not like it, but you have to try it if you want to really know the city. Then, we need to think of food as means to reach and be reached by other cultures, and for that to happen, I have to tell you how wine was always part of our culture; how we love fishy food since the beginning of civilization; I have to talk about garum, tempura, vindaloo, malasada, samosas, and other things you wouldn’t dream they are Portuguese related, such as codfish, an ingredient we love so much that we call it "our trustworthy friend", although you can’t find any cod nowhere near Portuguese waters. I know, everyone talks about the custard tarts and sour cherry brandy, and they are great, but I’ll always tell the whole story, and I guess that’s what makes me a good food tour guide. Come and try!
