The Jews of the Iberian Peninsula lived in the territory that today is Portugal between the 4th and 15th century, living always between acceptance and rejection, which shaped a unique way of surviving through ingenuity and knowledge and entrepreneurship. Protected by the Kings, many of its members were philosophers, humanists, scientists, and merchants, but also common traders, such as cobblers, tailors, and weavers, and actively participated in society at the time. They have left their mark in Portuguese culture, science and even gastronomy. Along the streets of downtown Lisbon, Alfama, Baixa, Rossio, and Chiado discover the incredible history of the New Christians, a distinctive Sephardic group that has survived more than 400 years of persecution in secret and how they perpetuated their rituals, flavors, and traditions. In this tour we will also learn about Lisbon role as a refugees' destination during World War II.
We had an outstanding tour with Francisco. He is very knowledgeable and was happy to share all that he could with us and take us to areas we would not have seen on our own. We only had a day to tour Lisbon and are so glad that we booked this tour. Highly recommend.
Exceeded expectations
Francisco is wonderfully knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his Lisbon home. He cares about telling the story of Jews in Lisbon even though there are not many records from before the expulsion in 1497. We learned a great deal about general Portuguese history as well. Francisco is a flexible and kind guide with a strong voice we could easily hear! Thank you!

Knowledgeable, considerate & excited about presenting his home city in the best light. We saw sights off the usual tourist routes, and shortcuts to navigate the steep streets of Alfama. He made the city “human”, with stories and insights into the life there over the centuries. A wonderful tour!
