I'm Gui (as all my friends call me), a 39-year-old local from Lisbon who loves his little corner of the world so much that I dream of making others fall in love with its cultural and historical richness. A student of Portuguese history, culture, literature, and language, I was only absent from my hometown for a year, when I decided to embraced the challenge of studying in Florence, Italy. Marveling at my country's historical and cultural connections with other countries and places around the world and over the centuries, I got lost in the labyrinth of all these intricate and constant tangents. Even today, instead of looking for a way out of them, I scrutinize every new and intriguing corner of this endless maze with the curiosity of a neophyte, aiming to call each of these new curious regions my home. I want you to discover all of my favorite places near Lisbon, in addition to Lisbon itself. From Sintra and its romantic mysticism to Cascais and its maritime voluptuousness, as well as Serra da Arrábida and its wild nature that hides corners that are both intoxicating and sacred. Then there's Óbidos and its medieval ambience, and Nazaré with its waves that crush forgotten legends & myths. We can't forget about Alcobaça and Batalha, with its Romanesque and Gothic monasteries, or about Tomar, once the capital of the Order of the Temple in Portugal. Queluz, Mafra and Ajuda and their magnanimous royal palaces are also worth mentioning, as well as the city-museum of Évora, also the best oasis for any desert. Join me on these journeys through Portugal's culture. From raw history, to cooked cuisine, scrambled architecture, tasteful music, a thousand textures literature and sweet, sour and spicy stories. You've just arrived to Lisbon, had some rest following your travel's ordeals, and need a proper introduction to the city that is standing before your eyes, so you won't lose time studying and preparing everything on your own, right? You're lucky! Other famous Lisbon visitors, such as Ulysses or Columbus, didn't have the opportunity to book this tour, which lead to the former ending in the hands - or should I say scales - of Ophiussa, and the latter to sail into Cascais' waters after a huge storm while returning from his 1492 adventure. That's why I'm here: to help you get introduced to my lovely & rather mysterious city. Since the origin of its name - given by the Phoenicians -, the sequence of people who contributed to our culture, and the juciest episodes of our history. This introductory tour can be adapted to any different guest, taking into account their needs, interests, preferences, and philosophies. I'll have time to sit down with you and give nice suggestions to your trip. See you soon?
-We will start by downtown Lisbon, where you'll understand the before and after of an event that changed the landscape of our city. -We will proceed to walk through the big Squares of Restauradores, Rossio & Figueira, as well as the Baixa quarter. -Then, we will go uphill (either walking or using some elevators) to the area around St. George Castle, catching some breathtaking views on the way, on the viewpoints of Chão Loureiro, Santa Luzia & Portas do Sol, before diving deep into the roots of the city. -After, we'll explore the original Lisbon, the old Alfama - a small town inside the city, with narrow streets crisscrossed by even narrower stairs. -We will emerge next to the Cathedral (Sé) and see other important churches on its surroundings, until we'll end up in Praça do Comércio - the gateway to Lisbon in all its splendour. -At last, we'll finish in the busy Chiado neighbourhood, a place that will wrap everything up for you. After this tour, you'll have a strong perception of Lisbon's center!
