We will depart from Lisbon on the A1 highway for a 1.5-hour drive (about 80 miles) to Fátima, the most important pilgrimage site in Portugal. Upon arrival, I will explain the history of the Sanctuary, its basilicas, and lead a visit to the little-known Museum of Fátima. Among its treasures is the crown that holds the bullet removed from Saint John Paul II after the 1981 assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square. We will explore the Chapel of the Apparitions (1919), built on the exact spot where Our Lady appeared; the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (1928), where Saints Francisco and Jacinta are buried; and the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity (2007), one of the world’s largest Catholic churches. The Sanctuary Square is nearly twice the size of St. Peter’s Square in Rome and can hold up to half a million pilgrims in prayer. Our journey concludes in Valinhos, where the shepherd children lived, a place still filled with peace and devotion. After this sacred experience, we return to Lisbon.
