Shalom. Walking the streets of Gdańsk, we are not always aware of how many places were associated with the Jewish community. Many Jewish merchants came to Gdansk from Lithuania in the fifteenth century. In later centuries more immigrants came from Ukraine, Volyn, Latvia, Russia, Podolia, Great Poland. The main synagogue was opened in the nineteenth century and destroyed before the war. Many of those who remained in Gdansk were murdered by the Nazis. During the tour, I will show you the places connected with Jews' life. It will be also a chance to see the house in which a merchant and art collector Lesser Giełdziński lived and born in Gdansk Frank Meisler creator of the sculptures commemorated Kindertransports and who was one of the children who left Gdansk with the hope of life to London just before the war outbreak. Lesser Giełdziński Judaica collection can be seen in New York, but it is worth looking into the house, in which he lived and worked.
Suggested itinerary: - Walk alongside Old Town - 2 hours. - Stop at the place where the Great Synagogue was located. It is marked with the Synagogue model and is situated in the vicinity of Shakespeare Theater. - Walk alongside Długa Street to see where Frank Meisler was born and former Lesser Giełdzinski House. - During the walk you will also see the rebuilt patrician houses, Main Town Hall, Neptune Fountain, Green Gate, Green Bridge, Cows Bridge over Motława River. - Entrance to former Lesser Giełdziński house - part of Gdansk Museum (Artus Court ) - 20 min. - Stop on the Green Bridge to make a photo. - Stop on Granary Island to see the place where Jewish getto was situated. - Tea/coffee/lunch break can be arranged at any moment. On-demand driving to Chełm (15 min) where the biggest Jewish cemetery was located from XVI cent. - Visit in New Synagogue in Gdansk - Wrzeszcz - 1 hour (driving time 15 min). - On the way passing Jewish Cemetery in Sopot.
