Hi, I am Yoko. I've been with ToursByLocals since June 2018. I had a few years off from guiding during and a little while after Covid-19 until December 2023. So, about one and a half years, I garnered 59 five star reviews (hurray!) on ToursByLocals which I highly appreciate to all of my customers for that! And in January 2024, I am finally back to the marketplace which I missed so much! Before the pandemic battered the travel industry globally, I had many customers from around the world from ToursByLocals. I was lucky enough to have had wonderful customers and each tour was memorable and enjoyable. The Rugby World Cup 2019 held in Japan was phenomenal. I did tours almost every day and all of my customers shared their excitements with me. Let me talk about what you can expect from my tours. Art, design, craftwork, architecture, fashion, tea ceremony. . . if these keywords ring bell, I may be the right one. As a former art college student in London, England, I am still pretty keen on the arts. Architecture in particular, is one of my expertise that I've guided pretty often even during my hiatus period. Tokyo can offer some architectural gems, and it's heading to a more environmentally friendly direction such as increasing number of wooden high-rise buildings being planned. About anime or manga, though I respect sub-culture, I'm sorry I'm not the best guide, if these are your interests. Having been a tea ceremony practitioner for 15 years, it is also my passion. It is a quintessential Japanese culture that crystallizes all the art forms of our unique culture: tea, flower arrangement, painting, calligraphy, architecture, incense ceremony, traditional artisanal works. . . It can be felt with five senses; thus, I find the common aspects with architecture that also stimulate the five senses. Tea whisks, kimono, among other craftwork are important components of the tea ceremony; however, just like many traditional things, they're on the verge of extinction. But in recent years, works by craftspeople are catching attention worldwide and even Western luxury brands started to pay special attention to Italian or Japanese craftwork. As a guide, discovering and introducing these hidden Japanese treasures to my customers is one of my aspirations and missions to save our tradition. I am a pretty traditional-oriented person, but at the same time, my mindset is pretty business-oriented. This is because I've been in global businesses for long. Therefore, I welcome business travellers with whom I enjoy exchanging views about the world! Licensed tour guide-interpreter I'm not a driver but I can accompany you in your vehicle.

Overview of your Tokyo tour

Tokyo offers many architectural gems as Japan has produced myriads of world famous architects. In 2024, another Japanese architect had the honour of being listed in the prestigious Pritzker Prize. This tour's main focus is to visit these architectural sites in Harajuku, Omotesando and the neighbouring towns by starting at Prada that is an iconic building of the neighbourhood. In the area, most of the buildings are contemporary architecture that accentuate these cultural and trendy towns where fashionistas gather. On top of the basic fixed places to visit, I will pick up some extra places according to the customers' interests. Note: - Some sites view from outside and we will not go in. - Admissions of facilities are subject to the opening of the facilities (e. g. , Nezu Museum closes on Mondays; Okamoto Taro Memorial Museum closes on Tuesdays. Also, change of exhibits at each museum, etc. )

Yoko gave us an extraordinarily detailed and creative tour of contemporary architecture and design in one neighborhood in Tokyo, one with a lot of high-end stores along with museums, apartment buildings, and finally the Olympic Stadium. We got a real sense of the history of post-war Japanese architecture, the relationship of star architects to major clients (Prada!), and the constantly evolving scene. Yoko really knows the history comprehensively and is passionate about it. She scaled the talk perfectly to our interests--and enlarged them (I started out indifferent to the commercial design elements but she made me understand how they mattered). Strongly strongly recommend. We learnt a huge amount that informed the rest of our stay in Tokyo. Gracious, smart and a great communicator.

One of the best tours I have ever had in 20 years of traveling. Yoko is 100% fluent in English and extremely knowledgeable about Japanese architecture. The pre-tour communication was excellent. She really tailored the tour to my interests. I learned so much and she was nice enough to send me references for further study after the tour. She was very sensitive to my age and experience. I was so grateful that she suggested putting my heavy bag and backpack in a locker! We had an amazing connection and our conversation was very pleasant but always centered on contemporary Japanese architecture. This was everything a tour should be - informative, accurate, and inspiring one to learn more. I recommend Yoko very highly. If I came back to Tokyo, I would try to have more tours with Yoko. I enjoyed meeting her and she is extremely skilled at giving this tour.

An excellent tour in Omotesandō for those interested in Fashion, Art, Design and Architecture. We had a fantastic tour, despite the poor weather, and Yoko picked the ideal sites to match our interests. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful tour with Yoko and learned a lot about contemporary architecture in Tokyo/Omotesando. The contact before and after the tour was very professional and friendly too. For example - we got a list with all the houses we saw, together with the names of the architects and the years when these buildings opened. It was a great pleasure and Yoko is a fantastic tour guide!
