Our Tokyo by Night tour with Makayla was the highlight of our 21-day trip through Japan, Korea, and China. The city’s stunning buildings, vibrant lighting, and incredible 3D screens made every moment unforgettable, truly exciting, and a lot of fun. Many dressed in their native attire and a few looked like cats, but all were dressed nice to enjoy the evening. This crowd seemed so respectable of each other. I have never once seen anything quite like this. Nor have I ever seen such a clean city, not a trash can one to be found. Despite the busy trains, Makayla guided us effortlessly and took us to a clean, delicious restaurant that suited everyone. Her very clear English, local knowledge, and friendly personality made the tour exceptional. I would gladly return to Tokyo and tour with her again—she has my full respect and highest recommendation.

Hello! My name is Makayla. For me, being a tour guide combines two things that I enjoy: travel and connecting with people. I love meeting new people and exploring places with my clients. I offer tours both in Tokyo and its country-side that will give you an opportunity to see Japan from a new angle. Japan has been my home for 40 years. To me my host country is a unique place of contrasts, where the traditional and modern walk hand in hand. It's a country of ancient temples and sky reaching high-rises, of tranquil gardens and busy city streets. It is my pleasure to help others experience the charm of Japan through the unique perspective of a local, who also happens to be a westerner. I was one of the first Tokyo guides of ToursByLocals - I worked for the company until 2010. In that year I left for Santa Fe, New Mexico to pursue a degree in education. While there, I continued to work as a guide with a local tour company. Coming back to Japan, I resumed guiding foreign visitors here. My intention as a guide is to assist you have the most enjoyable and authentic Japan experience. Overview of your Tokyo tour
Tokyo is a truly unique city, seamlessly blending the charm of traditional Japan with the innovation of the 21st century. This three-day tour offers a chance to experience both sides of the city—its iconic modern landmarks and its rich cultural heritage—at a comfortable, enjoyable pace, with plenty of time left for personal exploration. The tour includes two daytime excursions (each approximately four hours) and one four-hour evening tour. You’re free to choose the order that best fits your schedule. The night tour includes a visit to a traditional izakaya (Japanese pub) for a light evening meal. If you’d prefer a different type of restaurant, I’d be happy to make adjustments. If shopping is a priority, I can tailor the itinerary to include some of Tokyo’s best shopping areas or offer recommendations based on your interests.

Makayla was a wonderful and gracious host for her adopted home of Tokyo - she has lived here for over 30 years. Makayla provided us a two day tour of Tokyo where we covered many major sites, all expertly explained as we walked about. She also took us to the Imperial War Museum which had a Mitsubishi Zero fighter in a beautiful paint job. We made Mt. Fuji a full day event and at our request hired a spacious sedan for the day. She gave us great pointers on using the subway systems and we made three solo trips on the system with no issues! You will enjoy whatever tour you choose with Makayla.

Our three day tour of Tokyo with Makayla was outstanding. Makayla is knowledgeable, friendly, professional, flexible, and a great person. Our tour was a walking and using public transportation which is extremely easy to use. Makayla was always concerned about our safety and ability to traverse stairs. We ate three meals with Makayla at local non tourist restaurants, all of which were different with great tasting food at very reasonable prices. I highly recommend Makayla as your tour guide without reservations.

Visit Sensoji Temple and Nakamise street - Go To Tsukiji Fish Market for a delicious sushi lunch there (the order of these can be swapped) Day 2 - 4 hours - Pick up from your hotel at 5 pm - Visit Shibuya Crossing for some hip energy and city lights - Dinner at an izakaya, traditional Japanese pub - Go to Omoide Yokocho for a stroll down the alley lined by tiny pubs. - A stroll through Kabuki-cho - Return to hotel Day 3- 4 hours - Go to Harajuku, visit the Meiji Shrine at the Yoyogi Park - Visit the Tokyo Station area and the Imperial Palace Gardens (Gardens are closed on Mondays and Fridays) OR - Sightseeing at Nihonbashi - the stylish heart of Tokyo - Deli lunch at the roof top terrace of the Mitsukoshi Department store - Return to hotel OR stay in the city
