Hello, I am Toshi, local tour guide in Tokyo and surrounding area. Tokyo is an attractive city where new and old things coexist. Let's explore the heart of Japan and Tokyo together. I was born in Aichi prefecture (located between Tokyo and Kyoto) and grew up there. I have lived in the Tokyo area more than 30 years. When I was a child, I was interested in different cultures, so I studied English enthusiastically to communicate with people who have different cultural backgrounds. After graduated from college, I was in the computer business for about 40 years. I've traveled a lot and visited many countries. When I was in my thirty's, I lived in San Francisco, California, for four years. I experienced a great deal of cultural exchange there. After retired, I acquired the National Tour Guide License, and I have been in the tourism business since 2017. I personally like walking around towns. I sometimes do temple and shrine hopping, and once in a while I visit sake breweries for fun. I also like strolling around the Tsukiji food market, Ryogoku area famous for sumo, and Asakusa and Ueno where we can feel the atmosphere of Tokyo's past decades. Most of my tours are on foot, simply because it's the best way to explore inner Tokyo and the surrounding area. We have a very sophisticated transportation system here in Tokyo. We can get almost anywhere using trains, subways, and buses. My tours are planned to teach you about the people, culture, and history of Tokyo and Japan. I aim to provide an informative experience that helps you understand what makes Tokyo, Japan such an attractive place to be and travel to. Why not explore the magnificent mountains and lake sneaking out of the crowded Tokyo people. Hakone is a popular tourist area among the Japanese and with many attractions. In one hour by train, we reach Odawara station, which is the gateway to the Hakone area. From Odawara station, we look around the popular spots using mountain trains that climb steeply, cable cars, ropeways, and pirate boats. At the famous Owakudani Valley with volcanic activities, we can eat black egg which is said to extend your life seven years longer. We take a lunch break at Lake Ashi watches the water sparkle. Weather permitting, we can see the magnificent Mount Fuji from the ropeway, the pirate boat, and the shore of Lake Ashi. On the shore of Lake Ashi, we stroll around historical sites such as the Old Tokaido Road, Hakone Checkpoints and Hakone Jinja Shrine. After exploring Hakone, we catch mountain buses to Odawara station. Tired from a day of walking, I love to drink a beer or a wine on the train back to Tokyo.
This is the third tour we have done with Toshi over 4 years. He is amazing. He is very knowledgeable. This tour is incredible. The transportation was via bullet train, local train, mountain train, cable car and the skyrope. The views were stunning and visiting an active volcano was pretty cool, although the smell of sulphur was a surpise. I cannnot recommend highly enough.

Toshi is a fantastic guide. He speaks English beautifully, has a great sense of humor and was so well versed in the history of Japan. We learned so much from him! He was also great in helping us with things like how the train system works, getting train travel cards, navigating the bullet train, where to shop for particular items, etc. After reading all of Toshi's 5 star reviews on Tours by Locals, we took a chance and booked both tours with him. He did not disappoint and we highly recommend him for any of his tours. Arigatou, Toshi!
Travelling by subway and train to Hakone with our amazing guide Toshi was the beginning of a fantastic day tour. Toshi was knowledgable, informative, professional and had a great personality. We were lucky enough to have a totally clear day in Hakone and were able to see Mount Fuji first from the Hakone Ropeway and throughout the afternoon from various vantage points. We ate black eggs cooked in the water from the natural sulphur flows and enjoyed the local cuisine. This was a seriously wonderful tour, made all the better by our outstanding guide, Toshi.
Toshi was the perfect guide! He was energetic, knowledgeable, fun, witty, and genuinely interested in making sure we had an exceptional experience. toshi guided us for four consecutive days and every day was wonderful. The trip to Hakone was originally scheduled for our third day but because of weather concerns he moved it to the fourth day which was the perfect decision because it ended up being a beautiful day. We had a clear view of Mount Fuji with fresh snow on top!
This was an exceptional tour. Toshihiko Tsuboi puts a lot of effort in making a historical "lesson"/background to the tour, and knows the area very well. This is a beautiful place used by the Tokyo population to "get out of town". He also showed us great local food, off the beaten path. Very highly recommended.
Toshi was amazing! He picked us up at our Hotel in Tokyo for our day trip to Hakone. We had a list of things we were interested in doing in the one day, and he was able to accommodate our requests and even added an amazing Onsen to our day. He was very knowledgeable giving great historical information along our travels and was just a pleasure to spend the day with and talk to. He took us to a small local restaurant for lunch that we would never have found and the traditional meal was delicious. We did pretty well with the Tokyo transit system on our own, but for the day trip we could not have made all the connections: train, to mountain train, to funicular, to cable car, to boat, to shuttle bus, to train - by ourselves. We would do another tour with Toshi in a heartbeat.
